Can GE build my high efficiency and low emissions coal power plant?

YES. As the world’s need for accessible power grows, coal power will continue to be a vital way to meet this demand. However, to limit emissions, it is essential that coal-fired power plants provide the highest efficiency and rely on leading air quality and pollution control technologies.


Can GE help reduce my steam plant’s operating costs?

YES. We have a proven track record of executing on schedule and on budget for our customers throughout our steam power plant services. Our proactive outage planning based on fleet history allows us to focus maintenance spend where it’s most needed. 

Can GE improve the efficiency of my power plant?

YES. Applying GE’s full suite of upgrade solutions to the world’s existing fleet could improve the average efficiency of coal plants from 34% to 38%. That four-point improvement is the equivalent of removing all the CO2 emissions from Germany. And every point of efficiency gained means around 3% less coal is needed for the same output, adding up to $5 million per year in additional value for a typical 1,000MW power plant.

Our ultra-supercritical technologies achieve the highest efficiency rate at a coal-fired power plant, delivering 47.5% against the global average of 33%. Each percentage point improvement in efficiency reduces CO2 emissions by 2%.

Our technology can address all the sources of non-greenhouse gas emissions, like NOx, SOx and particulate matter from any coal-fired power plant and remove up to 99% of the local emissions. Asset Performance Management (APM) continuously monitors steam plant equipment health, enabling operations teams to make decisions that enhance plant performance, reduce unplanned downtime, and extend plant life with minimal capital investment.

When steam power plants are operating in grid demand mode, they are required to ramp up faster and more often than they were originally designed to—making real-time monitoring especially important. Our Digital Power Plant software interprets data from more than 10,000 sensors to improve coal-fired steam power plant performance. The result? A 1.5% increase in efficiency, 5% less unplanned downtime and 3% lower CO2 emissions.
