Naphthalene is used as a raw material for producing a variety of substances, including phthalic anhydride, dye intermediates, surfactants, and basic chemical products. As well as producing refined naphthalene, phthalic anhydride, and surfactants in our own plants, we supply 95% naphthalene to customers in Japan and around the world.
95% naphthalene
We can also export melt (liquid) using specially equipped ships.
To manufacture 95% naphthalene, coal tar is first distilled. The oil from the resulting distillate, containing a large amount of naphthalene, is then further refined and distilled.
95% naphthalene is used as a raw material for making the company’s phthalic anhydride, as well for surfactants and refined naphthalene. JFE Chemical ships 95% naphthalene for use as a dye intermediate and raw material for chemicals, both nationally and overseas, utilizing special ships (for melt) and ISO containers.
Main applications
- Phthalic anhydride
- Dyes and intermediates (bon acid, β-napthol)
- Surfactants
Refined naphthalene
High-purity naphthalene, produced by eliminating all impurities.
This high-purity substance is the result of purifying 95% naphthalene further, by hydrodesulfurization, adsorption denitrification, and crystallization. It contains a very low level of impurities, and is widely used as a dispersant for emulsion polymerization, to enhance the flexibility of rubbers used as raw materials for tires, and as a raw material for basic chemical products.Refined naphthalene
Main applications
- Dispersants for emulsion polymerization
- Insect repellants
- Dyes and intermediates
- Organic pigments
Phthalic anhydride
JFE Chemical manufactures high-grade phthalic anhydride using the world’s only fluidized bed catalysis process.
Phthalic anhydride manufactured by catalytic oxidation of 95% naphthalene is widely used as a raw material in plasticizing agents to enhance the flexibility of PVC resins, for making wallpapers, floor electrical wire coverings, and PVC leather for home furnishings.
For the contact catalysis method, we employ the world’s only fluidized bed process for the manufacture of phthalic anhydride. The colorless, transparent phthalic anhydride we produce this way, is highly rated.Phthalic anhydride
Main applications
- Raw material for plasticizing agents
- Paints and pigments
- Unsaturated polyester resins
Surfactants (NSF)
Contributing to improved public infrastructure
One of our group companies, K&D Fine Chemicals (Co., Ltd.), manufactures water reducing agents for concrete, dispersants for emulsion polymerization of synthetic rubbers, as well as dye dispersants and other surfactants (NSF: naphthalene sulfonic acid formalin condensate). The water reducing agents for concrete are used for enhancing the strength of electric power poles and Hume pipes (drain pipes), thereby contributing to improving public infrastructure.
Main applications
Water reducing agents for concrete
Adding a mere 1% of a water reducing agent to concrete improves the fluidity of concrete and makes it easier to handle. Also, since fluidity can be enhanced without adding water, this product can enhance the strength of concrete by reducing the amount of water in the concrete.

These dispersants can prevent any differences in the shade of color, to ensure color uniformity. The products are mixed with dyes for garment dyeing processes and with inks for printers.
Dye dispersants
These dispersants are used in manufacturing processes for the synthetic rubbers typically used for automobile tires. These are functional chemical products used for enhancing the uniformity of “emulsion polymerization” reactions.
