We offer efficient pumps and related services for boiler feed, condensate extraction, and cooling water applications. We also service the blowers that move pulverized coal into the boiler.
A coal or oil steam power plant produces electricity. Coal is the most available fuel, has a rather stable price and as a result is the most cost-effective fossil-fired technology. Nowadays, crude oil or heavy fuel oil have become quite unusual as fuels for electricity generation purposes. Sulzer provides maintenance and service for all rotating equipment to improve efficiency and reliability.
Coal- and oil-fired process
Coal- and oil-fired steam power plants have steam turbines to convert the heat energy of combustion into mechanical energy, which then operates an electric generator. All plants use the steam turbine for the drop between the high pressure and temperature of the steam and the lower pressure of condensing vapor. The overall efficiency of the power plant depends mainly on the type of boiler (subcritical, supercritical or ultra-supercritical) and steam turbine being used.

Boiler feed water and booster pumps
Feedwater pump for high differential heads
Feed water pumps (FWP) pump the feed water from the de-aerator through the HP heaters to the boiler. The major characteristic of FWP is their high differential head. In medium to large size coal- and oil-fired power plants, the main FWP are horizontal barrel type while booster pumps are horizontal single stage double suction type. In small coal and oil captive power plants, the main FWP could be also horizontal ring section or axially split type and the booster pumps horizontaly single stage end suction type.
Condensate extraction pump for coal- and oil-fired
Condensate extraction pumps for multiple applications
Condensate extraction pumps (CEP) extract the condensate water from the condenser and pump it through the condensate polishing system and the LP heaters to the de-aerator feed water tank. In medium to large size coal- and oil-fired power plants, the CEP are vertical canned type to ensure enough Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA). In small coal and oil captive Power Plants, the CEP could also be horizontal end-suction type.
Cooling water pump for coal- and oil-fired
Cost-effective high flow cooling water pumps
Cooling water pumps (CWP) provide fresh water to cool the exhaust steam in the condenser and pump it back to the wet cooling tower or the outlet of open cooling system. The major characteristic of the CWP is their high flow. In medium to large size coal- and oil-fired power plants, the CWP are vertical column type. In small coal and oil captive power plants, the CWP could also be horizontal axially split type.
