These are carbonaceous particles with a highly crystalline graphite structure in the form of mesophase spheres (spherocrystals) and in bulk mesophase state, manufactured from coal tar using JFE Chemical’s own innovative technology. With the ever increasing capacity and durability of Li-ion rechargeable batteries for PCs, smartphones, and mobile devices, this material has earned a reputation as an excellent material for high-capacity, high-performance anodes. Also, in light of the huge growth expected in electric cars and large-scale electrical energy storage systems in the coming years, we are now developing new carbon and resin composite materials for non-battery applications.
MCMB graphite
We create spherulitic graphite by applying a heating process to our special coal tar pitch, and then converting the generated mesophase spherulite into anode material.
The anode materials are made of a graphite structure ranging in grain size from several µm to several tens of µm.
Characteristics
- High durability as an anode material for Li-ion batteries
- Ability to adjusting grain size to form high-density electrodes
- High capacity and high initial charging efficiency
- Excellent safety and rate characteristics
- High electrical and thermal conductivity
Bulk mesophase graphite
Bulk mesophase graphite is created by making a mesophase structure even more crystalline, to achieve extremely good cycle durability. It is suitable for Li-ion batteries in applications in which a long operating life is expected.
Characteristics
- High cycle durability
- Excellent safety and rate characteristics
- High electrical and thermal conductivity
Application examples
- Anode material for Li-ion rechargeable batteries
- Filler for carbon and resin composite materials
