It Works

Before now, traditional coal recovery processes could not capture fine coal smaller than 325 mesh (44 µm), causing valuable clean coal to report to a recirculation stream or out to the refuse pond in surprising quantity. But now the proof is in the plants, as our Sub325® fine coal recovery system is capturing 95% or more of this ultra-fine clean coal. Removing the recirculating fines creates efficiency throughout your coal fines circuit.


PROVEN RESULTS


An independent coal industry consultant, Weir International Inc., conducted an extensive 18-day testing procedure over the trial period at a Northern App coal mine. It determined that Somerset’s Sub325® fine coal recovery system is “effective in dewatering the fine coal slurry and producing a saleable dewatered fine coal product.” The chart below details some results from the study. 

The Technology

While solid bowl centrifuge technology has been around the coal industry since the 1970s, no one could make the technology work well enough to be economically viable.

The resulting coal product was too high in moisture, so the coal industry rejected the technology. However, Somerset Coal International cracked the code with Sub325® fine coal recovery technology—enabling minus 325 mesh (44µm) particles to be delivered to the clean coal belt consistently at moistures between 15 and 23%.



CRACKING THE CODE

Somerset partnered with one of the world’s leading centrifuge manufacturers, Centrisys Corporation, a proven leader in centrifuge technology who shared our vision for innovation and made three key improvements to the solid bowl centrifuge technology:
  • The internal geometries of the decanter centrifuge have been redesigned, allowing the delivery of previously unobtainable low moisture ultra-fine coal particles.
  • Through a variation of process control, the optimum G-force and torque are achieved to create optimal particle-water separation.
  • The rotational differential between the bowl and the scroll of the centrifuge has been optimized through a wider range of variable options.
