Bilbaína de Alquitranes, S.A. (BASA) focuses its activity on the fractioned distillation of coal tar, using two facilities:
- Continuous distillation plant.
- Discontinuous distillation plant.
The same process is carried out in both facilities, and the reason for their co-existence is simply to provide flexibility in production.
As a result of the coal tar distillation process, several products are obtained:
- Pitch, mainly used in the aluminum and graphite industry.
- Naphthalene, a product that can be used for many different things such as dyes, superplasticizers, etc.
- Special tars, for obtaining waterproofing materials, refractories, etc.
- Creosotes, used in the treatment of wood.
- Oils mainly for the manufacture of carbon black, and other derivatives.
Installations
Along with the production plants, BASA also has environmental protection installations:
- Thermal oxidation plant
- Industrial water treatment plants
- Rain water treatment plant.
Products
The heaviest fraction obtained from coal tar distillation is pitch, which makes up 50% of the raw material. Coal tar pitch is a black solid at room temperature and is made up of a mix of many different hydrocarbons.
We sell a wide variety of pitches so we can better meet the needs of the different sectors of the consumer market. The main markets are:
- Manufacturing of anodes for the aluminum industry (Söderberg anodes and pre-baked anodes)
- Binder and impregnating agents in the manufacturing of graphite electrodes (electrodes, electric arc furnaces used in the ironworks industry, cathodes, and aluminum electrolysis anodes)
- Electrode paste for ferro-alloys (silicon metal, ferro-silicon, ferromagnesian silicate and magnesium silicate)
- Clay pigeons
- Pitch coke and briquettes
- Carbon fibers, polygranular graphite and carbon-carbon composites)
DISTRIBUTION FORMAT
Solid: solid pitch at room temperature can be delivered:
- in Bulk
- in Big bags (0,8 Tm, 1 Tm, 1,5 Tm)
This product can be sent by truck, in containers or by vessels
Liquid: thermally insulated tankers to transport by roadway.
