Overview
Skytree units filter CO2 from outdoor and indoor air and dispense it in concentrated form. Our CO2 supply is clean, adjustable and continuous.
Linked to a power source, our units can operate anywhere: in the middle of the ocean, in the desert, or at the heart of a city.
Skytree units have a wide range of applications: from improving plant growth to water treatment and fuel synthesis.
Our core competency is the transfer of our Direct Air Capture technology to products and applications on the small to medium scale and bring these to the market by establishing licensing partnerships with leading companies within industry.
Air Recirculation
Air Recirculation Technology
Implementing our air capture technology in terrestrial environments such as cars, planes, homes and hotel rooms leads to healthier indoor environments and also saves energy.

Closed Space CO2 and H2O Capture
Humans exhale on average 1 kilo of CO2 per day, and in closed environments, this can quickly build up and create symptoms such as headaches, nausea and decreased productivity. Additionally there is considerable build up of water in closed environments due to human occupation.
Our process further improves air quality by considerably reducing the amount of outdoor air pollution that is ventilated into closed spaces.
Removing excess CO2 not only leads to healthier environments, it also has the added benefit of allowing greater air recirculation. This in turn reduces the need for a ventilation system to either heat or cool outside air creating energy savings.
This is also known as HLR (HVAC Load Reduction) Technology.
Skytree is a spinout of the European Space Agency (ESA). Our CO2 extraction technology was developed by the European Space Agency to keep astronauts alive in space.
The Advanced Closed-Loop System (ACLS) is a regenerative life-support system for closed habitats that will soon be installed on board the International Space Station (ISS).
Our air capture technology was originally developed to make longer space missions possible by extracting the CO2 exhaled by astronauts on board of spacecraft. This technology was developed as part of a long-term project launched in 1996, and with a total budget of € 70 million. It will be implemented next year at the International Space Station (ISS) in the Columbus Module.

Air to Fuel
Our long-term goals lie in the emerging biosynthetic fuel market. An incredibly large-scale sustainable process that promises to transform one of our most important waste streams into an unlimited clean source of energy for the entire planet.
Methanol from CO2
Skytree works together with our partner Gensoric to develop the world’s first residential power-to-liquid and CO2 usage system. The ‘willpower’ system allows every citizen to produce his or her own fuel at home from surrounding resources: CO2, water, and electricity. Combining Gensoric’s technology with our solution could enable the first 100% energy self-sufficient home. The project is backed by the European Commission.
This project is made possible thanks to an internationally patent-protected electro-biocatalytical process technology that converts atmospheric CO2 into methanol. This methanol can then be stored or used for heating, generating electricity, or producing transportation fuel.
Vertical farming
Today more than half of the world’s population lives in cities and relies on food shipped over long distances. This inefficiency could be resolved by growing food locally. Skytree’s technology can play an important role here.
Food scarcity
The global human population is projected to surpass 9 billion by 2050. At the same time, humanity is also facing many challenges when it comes to food production, such as climate change, severe droughts, soil depletion, diseases, water pollution, water scarcity, and the loss of biodiversity. Vertical farming provides an optimal solution for feeding the growing urban population.
CO2 supply
CO2 is an essential building block in the growth of trees, plants and flowers. It is an essential component of photosynthesis, a chemical process that uses light energy to convert CO2 and water into sugars in green plants. The plants then use these sugars to grow. A higher level of CO2 can speed up this process and also enable healthier, stronger plants.
Skytree solution
Our technology gives the end user access to a convenient, independent supply of CO2 that is easy to use and maintain. Depending on the crop, this can lead to an increase in yields of 20% to 40%. Skytree is working with several indoor farming companies to make this process a reality.
