Oakbio is a “Carbon Capture and Utilization/Conversion” (CCU) company. Our Vision is to profitably convert CO2 and other green house gases (GHGs) into valuable products. Unlike other companies who are producing relatively low value biofuels, Oakbio is focused on renewable products that are inherently valuable and profitable in and of themselves, with or without a carbon tax or subsidy. Oakbio’s core competency is its deep understanding of microbial metabolism and pathways, and its proven technology platforms. Oakbio’s business model is to partner with established industrial businesses to develop low capex/opex carbon capture and utilization biofactories based on Oakbio’s core technologies.
High Value Products from Captured Carbon
Global emissions of carbon dioxide exceed 35 billion tons annually. These emissions are unsustainable and threaten the very habitability of our planet. Melting glaciers and ice caps, rising sea levels, unprecedented weather extremes are just some of the consequences of putting too much carbon into the atmosphere. Oakbio is doing something about this by creating technologies that transform carbon emissions from harmful waste into high value products. Please explore below to learn more about our unique approach, technologies, products.
TECHNOLOGY
Oakbio has developed an efficient, proprietary biotechnology platform for converting streams of waste carbon into readily marketable, high value products. Oakbio’s technology has demonstrated the conversion of CO2 from flue gas and other carbon sources into food and feed products, bioplastics, and chemicals.
The process is simple and straightforward. Raw flue gas (the CO2 source), combined with hydrogen, is fed into a bioreactor containing a solution of Oakbio’s proprietary microbes. The microbes rapidly consume the carbon/hydrogen mixture, generating specific products depending on the type of microbes and the process conditions. The system can be configured to operate as either a batch or continuous process. Because the energy for the conversion is derived from the hydrogen, the system can operate continuously – a distinct advantage over photosynthetic microbes that require sunlight to grow.
The technology has been fully validated on the bench and in the field. Oakbio’s microbes have successfully captured and converted CO2 from raw cement flue gas and oil refinery waste gas into n-butanol and PHA bioplastics. Animal feed and feed additives have been produced in laboratory conditions.
THE OAKBIO ADVANTAGE
High Value Products
Oakbio’s primary products include n-butanol and PHA bioplastics. n-butanol is currently made from petrochemicals and has a current market size of about $10 billion. It’s a key ingredient in making acrylic plastics and other polymers. It has an octane rating of 87 and can be used as a direct substitute for gasoline but with fewer emissions due to its low vapor pressure and cleaner combustion. PHA bioplastics are projected to be a $30 billion market by 2030. These plastics are 100% biodegradable and marine degradable. High biocompatibility makes PHAs of particular interest in medical applications.
Versatile Process and Products
Oakbio’s process can accept a wide range of carbon sources – industrial flue gases, agricultural waste, municipal waste and chemical waste. We have developed diverse, adaptable microbial platforms for converting this carbon into useful products. The microbes and process are adjusted depending on the source of carbon and desired products. The process is protected by existing and pending patents.
Efficient Capture and Conversion of Waste Carbon
Oakbio’s microbes utilize highly efficient metabolic pathways for fast growth, high cell density and high productivity. All of Oakbio’s microbes are aerobes (i.e., they grow in oxygen), allowing for utilization of simple and relatively low cost bioreactor designs and the direct capture of oxygen-containing carbon streams that other processes cannot use. Unlike the photosynthetic microbes employed by our competitors, Oakbio’s microbes utilize hydrogen for their energy source, allowing the bioreactor to operate 24/7 in the dark. The process can reduce CO2 below atmospheric levels.
Validated in Real, Industrial Conditions
Oakbio’s processes have produced high levels of n-butanol and PHA bioplastics from industrial carbon streams that include normally toxic gases like SOx, NH3, NOx, H2S, and CN. In contrast, microbes developed on pure, laboratory CO2, used by many companies, may be poisoned when exposed to raw industrial flue gases.
