ABOUT US
Carbicrete is a Montreal-based cleantech company that develops innovative, low-cost building solutions that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
We offer concrete manufacturers the process, materials and support to make lower-cost, higher-quality precast concrete in a way that reduces their carbon footprint.
Our technology enables the production of cement-free, carbon-negative concrete using industrial by-products and captured CO2.
Business Model
Carbicrete is licensing the use of its technology to precast concrete manufacturers. We supply the process and support to get our partners set up to produce high-quality, carbon-negative concrete.
Cement-free and carbon-negative
Concrete is the most abundant substance on Earth after water. But a key ingredient in concrete has always been cement, the production of which accounts for 10% of the world’s CO2 emissions. We’re going to change that!
Our process
Our breakthrough technology, which can be implemented in any concrete plant, makes it possible to produce concrete without using cement.
In our concrete, cement is replaced with steel slag—a by-product of the steel-making process that is often placed into landfills.
Using a process called carbonation activation, CO2 is injected into the wet concrete to give it its strength. As a result, any product made using Carbicrete technology permanently sequesters CO2, while turning industrial waste (steel slag) into a high-quality construction product.
Concrete made using this process meets the same specifications as cement-based concrete, has lower material costs, and possesses better mechanical and durability properties.
The end result? A cost-effective process for making precast products that reduces concrete makers’ carbon footprint.
TECHNOLOGY
Game-changing technology
Carbicrete’s technology enables the production of high-quality concrete using mineral waste and CO2 as raw materials.
Using a process called carbonation activation, we eliminate the need for cement in concrete by replacing it in the mix with ground steel slag, a by-product of steel-making. The concrete mix is poured into molds just like conventional concrete and is then cured using CO2.
During curing, the gas becomes a solid, binding together the slag granules, and giving the concrete its strength.
The process can be implemented in any precast concrete manufacturing plant.
Lower your carbon footprint through carbon-negative concrete
Carbicrete’s process avoids the GHG emissions associated with cement production (about 2kg of CO2 per standard-size concrete block) and then injects CO2 (1kg per block) into its products. Because more CO2 is consumed than emitted during the process, it is carbon-negative, allowing users of the technology to lower their carbon footprint.
Environmental benefits for concrete block makers
A typical concrete plant that switches from a cement-based process to Carbicrete’s can earn valuable carbon credits while contributing positively to the environment:
- 13,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided or sequestered
- 4,400 cubic metres of water saved
- 39,000 tons in landfill avoidance
- 14 tonnes in SO2 emissions reduction
