TECHNOLOGY
INDUSTRIAL LUNG
AN INDUSTRIAL LUNG INSPIRED BY NATURE
For their revolutionary carbon-capture technology, CO2 Solutions turned to the living world for nature’s most powerful known catalyst for carbon management, the carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme. After observing, analysing and understanding how this natural enzyme functions, the company was able to develop an innovative industrial disruptive process using the enzyme, at a very competitive operating cost.
Contrary to conventional carbon-capture technologies, the CO2 Solutions process neither requires nor produces toxic products. It is a carbon-capture solution that is clean, stable, with extremely fast absorption kinetics and low energy consumption, and poses absolutely no danger to human health or the environment.
Tremendous CO2 monetizing capacity
The CO2 Solutions technology allows up to 90% of post-combustion emissions to be captured directly from industrial sources like chimneys. The CO2 is then extracted for purification in order to be reused or converted. Adaptable to all types of gaseous effluents, this innovative technology helps companies better monetize their industrial processes, all while reducing their environmental footprint.
The solution of choice to actively, safely and profitably fight against climate change, our industrial lung technology turns every user into a dynamic player in the new carbon economy. To find out more about how you can profit from it, contact us!
EXCLUSIVE PROPRIETARY HIGH-PERFORMANCE ENZYME
1T1 – A PROPRIETARY HIGH-PERFORMANCE ENZYME
CO2 Solutions’ innovative carbon-capture technology stands out through its ingenious use of the carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme. Naturally present in humans and all living organisms, CA is vital to the organic exchange of CO2 during respiration. Heads turned in 2014 when CO2 Solutions presented their high-performance industrial version of carbonic anhydrase.
The new enzyme – named 1T1 – has the catalytic properties that dramatically accelerate CO2 capture as compared to conventional technologies. It does this using simple and harmless salt solutions – another innovation – rather than the toxic solvents used by other capture technologies.
RESULTS
Developed with the financial assistance of the Government of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), the 1T1 enzyme today lets CO2 Solutions offer an optimized technology that is unmatched. Whether tested in the lab or deployed in the field, the 1T1 enzyme’s longevity and catalytic performance put it in a class of its own.
In addition, CO2 Solutions was able to reduce significantly the manufacturing cost of the enzyme compared to third-party supplies, resulting in a reduction of operating costs of the technology. By enhancing the natural performance of the already impressive enzyme in its industrial lung technology, the new 1T1 enzyme has surged to the forefront. Internal development of the 1T1 enzyme also ensures that CO2 Solutions retains total control over its intellectual property, its production and applications, and has allowed the company to optimize its supply chain to the benefit of its customers.

APPLICATIONS
CAPTURE AND PURIFICATION
CO2 capture and purification at its best
Do your installations produce significant GHG emissions and you’re looking for a solution? CO2 Solutions’ industrial lung technology can help you adeptly rise to the challenge. Armed with an entirely eco-friendly carbon-capture process, we can transform your business by making it greener than you thought possible.
Our technology can capture up to 90% of your emissions to extract and purify 99.95% or more of the CO2 for reuse. No other technology allows you to do this much, this profitably, and without producing any toxic waste. Today, it is in the best interest of every forward-thinking business leader to pioneer the new carbon economy. It is a win-win for any company: a decreased environmental footprint and increased profitability.
An adaptable technology with incredible potential
When applied in a compact rotating packed bed arrangement smaller than a conventional contacting equipment layout, the industrial lung technology can be adapted for the most demanding configurations while reducing infrastructure costs significantly.
In addition, our enzyme technology lets you generate CO2 from your own emissions to reuse in your processes and applications, as you need it, without ever sacrificing the quality of the raw material. This in turn reduces your operating costs and ensures a stable supply chain.
You can also monetize the recovered CO2 as carbon credits. 70% of global energy demand is currently met through the burning of carbon-based fuels, and demand is predicted to double by 20351. By fitting your installation now with an industrial lung, you will not only be a leader in the new carbon economy – you will fully profit from it.
REUSE
A rich future for CO2 reuse
There are many applications for the reuse of CO2, the most common ones outlined in this section. At the heart of the new carbon economy developed by CO2 Solutions is the idea that the reuse of CO2 released from stationary sources is the most desirable environmental solution for reducing GHG emissions while transforming the gas into a revenue stream or a cost avoidance.
Applications for CO2 reuse will see tremendous and sustained growth in the coming years and decades. With far better performance than conventional carbon-capture technologies, CO2 Solutions’ technology was specifically designed to allow large-scale greenhouse gas emitters to profit from this market in dynamic evolution. There are two forms of CO2 reuse: direct or with conversion.
CO2 direct reuse
The industrial lung technology provides an on-site capture plant in order to reuse the CO2 that is being released. This can also reduce or eliminate dependence on external CO2 suppliers.
CO2 reuse with conversion
Can your company turn its CO2 emissions into a source of revenue? Can your CO2 find a nearby taker that results in a commercial transaction that brings you profit? A capture unit on your emissions can turn your waste into a raw material for the receiving company that benefits both parties – the seller reduces their environmental footprint while generating revenues; the buyer can rely on a supply of CO2 that is reliable, economical and environmentally friendly.
Major applications for CO2 reuse
- Enhanced Oil Recovery
- Pulp and Paper
- Regulating and stabilizing pH
- Reducing CaCO3 dissolution

CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE (CCS)
Capture and storage on the increase
Another strategy in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions is through carbon capture and storage (CCS), also enabled by CO2 Solutions’ innovative technology. This process is primarily for large GHG emitters who do not use CO2 for their industrial processes and who cannot sell any CO2 they capture to nearby third parties.
The process of CCS involves selectively removing CO2 from the effluent gases captured. It is then permanently injected under pressure deep underground into appropriate storage sites, most commonly in deep saline formations, exhausted oil and gas reservoirs and, more rarely, in unusable coal seams.
An enormous capacity for geologic CO2 storage worldwide
In its Fifth Assessment Report entitled Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognized carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a key part of the mix of various technologies necessary to reduce the impacts of climate change3. The IPPC has previously estimated that there is at least 2 trillion tonnes of CO2 storage capacity in appropriate geological formations globally4. Based on this and the fact that large industrial plants generate 14.7 billion tonnes of emissions annually, there are approximately 136 years of storage for CO2 emissions worldwide.
Alberta oil sands
Of particular interest is the opportunity in the Alberta Oil Sands, the fastest growing source of carbon emissions in Canada. Unconventional hydrocarbon production from the oil sands is a subject of concern due to its higher overall carbon footprint compared to conventional oil production. CCS is a compelling option for the mitigation of this footprint, and CO2 Solutions is ideally positioned to implement it. Pilot demonstrations currently underway using their enzyme technology have shown that it is 35 to 60% more economical than conventional amine processes.

PILOT DEMONSTRATION WITH HUSKY ENERGY
Under a Collaboration Agreement with Husky Energy, one of Canada’s largest integrated energy companies, CO2 Solutions operated a pilot unit of its enzymatic carbon capture process at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, near Montreal, Quebec, as part of a 2,500-hour, semi-autonomous exploitation. The unit was on a natural gas fired boiler to capture 10 tonnes/day of GHG, treating it to extract CO2 and purify it for reuse.
Operation of the pilot unit commenced in May 2015 with completion of testing in the third quarter of that same year. Test results all met or exceeded objectives, demonstrating the technology’s potential in real-world application. Husky Energy, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, continues to closely follow the evolution of the CO2 Solutions technology.
PILOT DEMONSTRATION WITH THE ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH CENTER
In September 2014, CO2 Solutions joined Energy & Environmental Research Center’s (EERC) program Advancing CO2 Capture Technology: Partnership for CO2 Capture (PCO2C) Phase III as a sponsor. Supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, PCO2C is one of the world’s leading CO2 capture technology testing and benchmarking initiatives. The EERC, a high-tech, non-profit branch of the University of North Dakota (UND), is recognized as one of the world's leading developers of cleaner, more efficient energy and environmental technologies.
In December 2014 and January 2015, CO2 Solutions conducted an extended series of tests of its technology using EERC’s state-of-the-art carbon capture test system. At approximately the 1 tonne-CO2/day scale, the testing involved the use of CO2Solutions’ proprietary 1T1 carbonic anhydrase enzyme to efficiently capture CO2from both natural gas and coal combustion flue gases. The pilot unit was used again for another test in 2016.
TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT WITH GASTRAN SYSTEMS
Since 2015, CO2 Solutions has worked with multiple suppliers of contact technology intensified by a rotating bed in order to help reduce the size of their enzymatic capture unit for carbon reuse to optimize the integration of an RTB.
The partnership lead to a considerable decrease in the size of the CO2 absorption system so it could be better adapted to constrained industrial spaces in power plants, oil refineries and other carbon-emitting plants. The system itself is now thirty times more compact than a conventional unit, an improvement that has resulted in an important reduction of initial investment costs. The installation of this smaller and lighter carbon capture unit does not require any new supporting structure or reinforcement of existing structures.
