We develop, build & operate of standardized facilities that produce local, circular e-methanol from renewable electricity, upcycled carbon dioxide and water, providing fuel solutions and feedstock to reduce carbon emissions.
Liquid Wind facilities combine proven technology from world-class experts
Liquid Wind will develop, finance, build and manage standardised facilities that produce e-methanol from renewable electricity and upcycled carbon dioxide.
EACH FACILITY WILL PROVIDE THREE KEY SERVICES
RENEWABLE FUEL / FEEDSTOCK
Providing a viable alternative to replace fossil-based fuel / feedstock. Enabling a reduction in CO₂ emissions as well as other harmful pollutants.
ANCILLARY SERVICES
Supporting Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to improve efficiency of and access to renewable electricity, accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.
CO₂ CAPTURE AND UTILISATION
Managing this service for large emitters, accelerating the adoption of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU).
INPUTS & OUTPUT
RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY
Renewable electricity (10 kV or 20 kV) is transformed and supplied by leading Swedish supplier, Axpo. This renewable electricity will be used to power the facility and to catalyse water into hydrogen and oxygen. Each facility will require 45-50 MW of renewable electricity per year to run the electrolyzers.
WASTE CO₂
Waste CO₂ will be captured from large emitters using efficient technology from Carbon Clean Solutions. This will be purified, concentrated and transported to the nearby e-methanol facility. Facilities will use up to 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
OXYGEN
Oxygen is created as a by-product which can be captured and sold to local industry.
HYDROGEN
Hydrogen is a highly effective energy source. By combining it with CO₂ hydrogen takes a liquid form becoming easier and more cost-effective to store, transport and use.
E-METHANOL
The resulting liquid, methanol, derived from renewable sources, can then be stored and distributed to industry, providing a renewable fuel or feedstock.
PROCESSES
ELECTROLYZER
Leading electrolyzer technology (alkaline or PEM) will efficiently and cost-effectively convert water into hydrogen, at a rate of approx. 700kg/hour. Nel’s modular concept enables us to develop a customized indoor hydrogen solution for our facilities, anywhere.
REACTOR
Using Haldor Topsoe’s cost-efficient SynCOR Methanol™ technology, concentrated CO₂ and hydrogen are mixed and compressed creating renewable methanol at a rate of approx. 5,000 kg per hour. CO₂ to methanol conversion is high, only 1.4 tons of CO₂ is needed to produce 1 ton of methanol.
INTELLIGENT DESIGN
Working with leading Consultancy Group, COWI, we will intelligently integrate each system to establish efficient and safe facilities. Smart management systems will be incorporated to closely monitor facilities, optimising processes in real time.
DESIGNED TO SCALE
A digital twin will be developed prior first installation to optimise the concept. This digital twin will be continuously maintained and used so facilities can be easily be replicated and adapted to meet their local environment. Liquid Wind will develop and license facilities to enable rapid scaling of the technology to meet global demand for carbon-neutral solutions and reduce CO₂ emissions as quickly as possible.
CIRCULAR PHILOSOPHY
Liquid Wind’s ambitions are firmly rooted as part of the circular economy. Facilities will be positioned to utilise waste resources (CO₂) from local industry, as well as providing them (O₂). Additionally, the ambition is to develop solutions which enable efficient capture of e-methanol emissions (CO₂) to be converted back into e-methanol.
Circular Fuel. CO₂ collected from exhaust emissions of ship or truck and converted back into e-methanol.
Circular, carbon-neutral fuel
By utilising and integrating innovative technology from world class partners, Liquid Wind will capture waste carbon dioxide and combine this with hydrogen, made from renewable electricity and water. This process will produce a renewable methanol, e-methanol, which can easily be adopted as liquid fuel or chemical feedstock providing a climate neutral solution.
METHANOL - THE VERSATILE LIQUID FUEL
Methanol (CH3OH) is an alcohol, consisting of only carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms. Methanol is an ideal fuel; it contains three energy-intensive C–H bonds and oxygen that is an elemental part of the combustion.
Most methanol is currently produced from fossil-origin natural gas, or coal. It can also be produced by fermentation from biomass, bio-methanol. The biochemical processes are however slow and easily affected by foreign biochemical cultures that disturb the production.
Our facilities will produce methanol from waste carbon dioxide and green hydrogen (using renewable electricity). This methanol is referred to as ‘green’ methanol, electro-fuel or e-methanol.
WHY E-METHANOL?
A clean and energy efficient liquid fuel, e-methanol is easy to store, transport and adopt for ships, such as Cruise Lines, Ferries, Ships on Inland water ways, Tankers, etc. Produced from renewable electricity and upcycled carbon-dioxide the fuel is carbon-neutral and can enable your fleet to meet current environmental regulations and reduce carbon emissions.
- Climate neutral - No additional Green House Gases (CO₂, CH4, and N2O) are added to the atmosphere
- Emissions – Compared to Marine Gas Oil e-methanol Due emits no sulphur , low NOx-formation thanks to water blending or catalytic reduction (SCR) and no hydrocarbon residues.
- Easy to Use – Methanol can be used in both two and four stroke engines either for conversion of existing vessels or new buildings. Fuel treatment onboard requires modest modifications.
- Easy to Transport - Liquid fuel, easy to handle and transport and compatible with existing infrastructure.
- Efficient Storage – The energy density is half of marine oils requiring double tank volumes. However, no cofferdams are required for tanks adjacent to water.
- Hazard – Methanol dissolves rapidly in water thereby diluted efficiently to low concentration. Low toxicity to living sea plants and animals. Toxicity can be compared to hydrocarbons.
- Flammability – Methanol burns with almost invisible flames but with a low temperature. Therefore, methanol can be extinguished with water at close distance.
- Miscible – Easily blended with other alcohols and gasoline.
The problem this product solves
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is one of the biggest challenges our planet is facing today. If we continue on the current path, temperatures will rise and we will face lots of (climate) difficulties. The biggest emitter today is fossil fuel, used for transportation and power generation.
We therefor urgently need to:
- Reduce our generation of CO2 drastically, and
- Rapidly change the type of fuel/energy we use
Liquid Wind has developed a method that converts waste CO2 and renewable (wind/solar) energy into pollution free liquid fuel. The company is currently developing the first facility in Sweden with a plan to rapidly build five more facilities in Scandinavia before expanding internationally.
Benefits:
- Carbon dioxide is captured from large CO2 emitters and re-used to produce liquid fuel
- The clean liquid fuel can be used to replace fossil fuel, like gasoline and diesel
Product features
Liquid Wind´s carbon neutral fuel, e-methanol, is created by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the point sources and producing hydrogen (H2) from renewable electricity and water. By mixing CO2 and H2 under pressure the liquid fuel is created. E-methanol also contains less air polluting substances (no Sox and low Nox) which eliminates the need for costly emission scrubbers or filters.
CO2 + H2 = CH3OH
Carbon Dioxide + Hydrogen = e-methanol
E-methanol is a clean burning fuel and it is good for the climate.
Product use cases
E-methanol will replace fossil fuel in many transport and shipping applications. Liquid Wind is in contact with large shipping companies and ferry operators that are in the early stages of becoming e-methanol clients.
Cruise ship companies value e-methanol, as it fullfils the demands/restrictions from Norway and eliminates particulates which create a black dust on ship decks. E-methanol can be stored very effectively on-board, maximizing the space available for paying cargo and passengers.
The trucking market is another large segment that e-methanol can serve. The market will grow gradually and will eventually reach 2 millions tons of fuel only in Sweden.
