In response to Emilie Michael’s reply to my letter of December 14. I thank her for acknowledging that my statements were factual. However, I am at variance with her assumption that this earth is reaching the end of its sustainable existence because of its rising population.
There are 195 countries in this world — 3.97bn live in just seven of them. China, India and the USA have the bulk of these and still have areas that sparsely populated — 3.6bn are shared by the rest. It has also been recently reported that the population is declining although the elderly population continues to grow.
She assumes that we will not be able to provide sufficient food for all. Like all of her generation she has grown up in a world where modern farming practices allows them to go to supermarkets etc and take produce off the shelves but of course this is not necessary for man’s survival.
In fact today there are still hunter gatherers in existence. Also during the last World War food was rationed but we never went short of the basics as most people kept hens and rabbits and grew many of their own vegetables.
Spare land was turned into allotments and people shared their produce. It is not too long ago that every small farmer here also grew most of what he wanted with very little purchased in shops, mainly tea and sugar. I am not suggesting those days will return but to me her reasoning is fatuous.
I see she is an environmental scientist and would suggest she should look at the chart jointly produced by climatologist Cliff Harris and meteorologist Randy Mann which shows global temperatures from 2,500BC to the present day.
In that 4,500 years there have been at least 78 major temperature swings including two since the 70s, there is a thread that connects that causes climate change. Whenever solar radiation (sun spots) decreases and volcanic activity has increased, global temperatures suddenly plummet, often within weeks or months.
As an example, when Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in June 1991 to March 1992, the global temperature went from 0.6 degrees above normal to 0.5 degrees below normal.
We can and should adopt things that help us create a cleaner environment but it should be done when it is shown that the alternatives are sustainable and viable and do not depend on us the taxpayer to subsidize them.
This hysteria about we causing climate change is false and has been propagated by those financial institutions and investors who issued so called “Green Bonds” or “Climate Bonds” and were in danger of losing vast sums of money. This is all about profit and they are doing as they always do, making us lesser mortals pay for it.
