Lummus Technology’s E-Gas™ gasification technology has the potential to make use of our most abundant energy resource—coal—in such a way as to dramatically reduce its environmental impact. This proven technology is one of the cleanest, most efficient commercial processes for converting coal or petroleum coke into a hydrogen rich synthesis gas ideally suited for substitute natural gas production, power generation, and refining or chemical manufacturing applications.
The process can cost-effectively remove more than 95 percent of the mercury in coal, and greater than 99 percent of the sulfur can be recovered and marketed for use primarily in the fertilizer industry. Additionally, the gasification process produces no ash and recycles by-products into useful products, including road construction materials.
With more than 25 years of proven commercial experience, the E-Gas technology for gasification provides a highly-efficient, environmentally superior and competitive base-load power alternative. In a refinery setting, the technology can process high sulfur petroleum coke into power, steam and hydrogen for the refinery and surrounding markets.
E-GAS™ TECHNOLOGY FOR COAL & PETCOKE CONVERSION
Description
Lummus Technology’s E-Gas™ technology produces valuable syngas and steam from petroleum coke or coal. The resulting syngas is processed further, heat energy in the syngas is recovered as high-pressure steam, then sulfur and other impurities are removed. The resultant clean, sweet syngas can be used as fuel gas for power generation, or further processed to generate hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, methanol, liquid motor fuels or many other chemicals.
Hydrogen for a refinery can be produced by shifting the carbon monoxide in the syngas with steam (water) to hydrogen and then using Lummus Technology’s pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology to produce pure H2. The sulfur can be recovered from the syngas as elemental or sulfuric acid using Lummus Technology’s sulfur recovery process. The methanol can be used to make olefins with Lummus Technology’s methanol to olefins process. The olefins may be further processed using Lummus Technology’s olefins conversion (OCT) technology. Depending on the region, Lummus Technology has the capabilities to execute the entire project, including construction.
LITERATURE
E-GAS PLUS® TECHNOLOGY FOR COAL, PETCOKE & RESID CONVERSION
Lummus Technology's E-Gas Plus® technology is designed to produce valuable syngas and steam from petroleum coke or coal and residues coming from refinery processes. The E-Gas Plus technology uses our E-Gas™ technology as the basis while adding residue injection into the first stage and co-gasifying the coke or coal slurry.
Hydrogen for a refinery can be produced by shifting the carbon monoxide in the syngas with steam (water) to hydrogen and then using Lummus Technology's pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology to produce pure H2. The sulfur can be recovered from the syngas as elemental or sulfuric acid using Lummus Technology's sulfur recovery process. For example, residue such as pitch from a hydrocracker can be co-gasified with petcoke or imported coal.
E-Gas Plus technology enables the refinery to make use of a challenging stream to produce additional hydrogen and steam needed by the refinery. Depending on the region, Lummus Technology has the capabilities to execute the entire project including construction.
