Hyperuricemia, as previously mentioned, is caused by the build up of uric acid in the blood. While uric acid is normally a helpful antioxidant, too much of a good thing can be dangerous to the body. Normally, the homeostasis of uric acid is maintained through urination, but in some cases this does not happen. The uric acid does not have an outlet to leave the body and can form deposits in the joints.
This condition is normally caused by a diet of rich and fatty foods. These foods often have a product called purine, which helps to produce uric acid. The excess crystals of uric acid are treated like an invading substance in the body and the immune system attacks them. This is what causes swelling.
If your diet consists of a lot of food with high purine content you run an increased risk of producing more uric acid.
The joints are not the only place where a buildup of uric acid can occur. Sometimes, the overproduction of uric acid can lead to kidney stones.
My next article will cover some of the causes and risk factors associated with gout.
