NETL Have Developed a Low-cost Membranes to Separate CO2 From Nitrogen in a High Volume of Flue Gas

National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) researchers have developed a method to custom-formulate low-cost membranes to more effectively separate carbon dioxide (CO2) from nitrogen in a high volume of flue gas. This ability to achieve both high selectivity and high permeability during post-combustion carbon capture operations is one of the most difficult problems facing membrane researchers today. The NETL group solved the challenge by chemically binding multiple membrane components with different critical properties into one high-performance material that can be easily scaled up to reduce the costs of large-scale carbon capture operations.

The work, which was recently featured in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science, builds upon the lab’s expertise developing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which combine sturdy polymers with inorganic crystalline particles that enhance selectivity and permeability. Prior work looked at integrating metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to create two-component MMMs, but this research takes the process a step further by fabricating three- and four-component MMMs, known as multicomponent mixed matrix membranes (McMMMs).

“Highly permeable membranes tend to have lower selectivity and vice versa. And very few membrane materials, even two-component MMMs, are capable of breaking the permeability-selectivity tradeoff,” NETL Research Scientist, Sameh K. Elsaidi, PhD, explained. “By formulating our membranes using multiple-component MMMs, we’ve opened a whole new realm of possibilities to enhance compatibility and gas separation performance.”

The research produced 10 different composite membranes featuring components selected for enhanced compatibility, permeability, selectivity and mechanical stability.

“Compatibility between the different components is especially important to the formulation,” Elsaidi added. “We optimised this interfacial compatibility by selecting MOFs with open metal centres that can strongly interact with the functional groups of the polymers, resulting in the formation of uniform, well-blended, defect-free MMMs.”

“We used density functional theory computations to show that the interactions between the polymer functional groups and the open metal centres were quite strong,” commented Janice Steckel, PhD, who also worked on the project. “We believe these strong interactions between the metal centre and the polymer minimises phase separation and contributes to the great separation performance of these composites.”

As part of this work, the NETL team also estimated the cost of carbon capture using each of the 10 custom-formulated membranes, with the lowest cost being US$55/t, which is a substantial cost savings from the current average of US$65/t, and represents a significant step towards meeting the US Department of Energy’s goal of US$30/t CO2 by 2030.

“While this research only encompassed 10 composite membranes, the approach we have developed has opened the door to a new exploration route for myriad MMMs with unique formulas and new state-of-the-art performance,” Elsaidi said.

This is not the first time the NETL team has tackled the permeability-selectivity tradeoff. Elsaidi and the other researchers in NETL’s Functional Materials Team have also recently developed a highly permeable carbon capture membrane through a dual-layer process.

“We believe that the membranes we are developing here at NETL represent the next generation of post-combustion carbon capture technologies,” Elsaidi said. “The work we’re doing is making a real difference in bringing down the cost of carbon capture, and that means a stronger energy foundation for the nation and better environmental sustainability.”

The research team included NETL researchers Sameh Elsaidi, PhD, Surendar Venna, PhD, Ali Sekizkardes, PhD, Janice A. Steckel, PhD, James Baker, PhD, John Baltrus, PhD, and David Hopkinson, PhD, along with Mona Mohamed, PhD, from the University of Pittsburgh.

K Line Plans a CO2 Capture System Demonstration for Ocean-Going Vessel

Japanese shipping firm K Line plans a demonstration project to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) on an ocean-going vessel, targeting eventually to reuse it in enhanced oil recovery processes or production of synthetic marine fuel.

K Line said today it is launching a two-year project to verify the effectiveness of capturing and storing CO2 emitted from vessels, as well as the operations and safety of CO2 capture facilities at sea using a demonstration plant installed on a vessel.

The project is targeting to begin operating a pilot plant installed on the 88,000 deadweight tonne K Line coal vessel Corona Utility by April 2021 to measure the performance and eventually develop a new CO2 capture system for vessels.

K Line's partner Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japanese engineering firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, will develop and build a small-scale demonstration carbon capture plant. The firm is planning to begin test operations of the plant at its factory by mid-2021 before installing it on Corona Utility. A hazard identification evaluation of the plant and its deployment on ships will be done in co-operation with Japanese classification society ClassNK.

K Line is looking to help the shipping industry achieve decarbonisation of its operations through the proposed project as the captured CO2 can be recycled as a new source for enhanced oil recovery, as well as a raw material to produce synthetic methane.

Japan is targeting to commercialise zero-carbon emitting vessels by 2028-30 to realise the International Maritime Organisation's target to reduce shipping emissions. Tokyo is considering introducing vessels fuelled with alternative fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia and synthetic methane, as well as those installed with an onboard carbon capture system.

Fellow Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Line is leading a cross-industry study to examine the concept of using methanation technology to supply zero-emissions marine fuel, with CO2 proposed to be captured from steelworks to produce synthetic methane.

JAXA to Develop a 20-foot Lunar Cruiser, Relying on Both a Giant Solar Panel and a Hydrogen Fuel Cell for Power

In early 2019, Toyota joined forces with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop a six-wheeled rover capable of transporting two astronauts and their gear on the moon. Development work is ongoing, the process is expected to take nearly a decade, but the partners have already agreed on a name.

It's an off-roader, albeit not one Toyota is used to developing, so it earned the name Lunar Cruiser. The Japanese firm explained it chose that name because the vehicle's basic mission is the same as the original Land Cruiser's: to bring its passengers home alive. FJ Cruiser-like trim on the front end creates another link to Toyota's SUVs.

While the Land Cruiser was designed to effortlessly cross some of the most treacherous terrain on the planet, the 20-foot-long Lunar Cruiser will need to take two astronauts on a 6,200-mile exploration trip (or, in Instagram influencer-speak, #vanlife) while relying on both a giant solar panel and a hydrogen fuel cell for power. As we reported in 2019, it will reach the Moon before the crew, and it will drive autonomously to greet them when they arrive. Once aboard, they'll head towards the lunar poles in search of frozen water.

Toyota explained the rover will be pressurized, so astronauts will be able to remove their spacesuits when they're in the vehicle's 140-square-foot passenger compartment. Interestingly, the firm is also studying how the pressurized rover could help a growing group of companies named Team Japan create a lunar surface-based society, and it's making a list of the many hurdles that need to be cleared before humans can colonize the Moon.

We're not there yet, and the Lunar Cruiser isn't scheduled to blast off until 2030. As of writing, engineers are using computer simulations to study its power and heat dissipation properties. They're also assessing the type of tires or wheels needed, and they're using both virtual reality-based software and scale models to find the best interior layout. None of the Lunar Cruiser's tech will find its way into the next-generation Land Cruiser, which should ditch its V8 and adopt a twin-turbocharged V6, but Toyota may choose to hide an Easter egg or two in the truck.

Hyperion's CEO: "The Future of Energy is on Hydrogen"

And he has good arguments to support that, even if convenient ones.

When Trevor Milton says there is room for FCEVs, he acknowledges the role BEVs to defend there is room for Nikola. Angelo Kafantaris did not worry about that. In an interview with Tom Voelk, Hyperion's CEO said the future of energy is on hydrogen. Simply put, FCEVs would be the future of transportation and that’s it.

Although it may seem pretty convenient for a guy that aims to sell FCEVs to say they are the future, Kafantaris could adopt a more conciliatory approach, like Milton, but he doesn’t. The reason we see is that Hyperion’s CEO has strong arguments to defend his point of view.

The main one is the weight. According to Kafantaris, a car that adopts hydrogen fuel cells is 60 percent more efficient than a leading battery electric vehicle solely based on mass. Being lighter is what makes it have to spend a lot less energy in moving around. We are not sure about the percentage he uses, but the mass argument is right.

The second argument is that getting the energy to move the car may be cleaner than recharging a vehicle. Voelk’s video is dedicated to learning where the hydrogen comes from. Kafantaris points to two main ways.

The first and not so efficient is electrolysis. According to Hyperion’s CEO, using energy to produce hydrogen does not seem to make sense: why not put this energy straight into batteries? He gets that but argues that there is a lot of electricity just going nowhere.

Solar and wind energy is an example. What some of these plants produce may be lost because most people need that energy at night, in their homes. Kafantaris’ proposition is to produce hydrogen with the energy that would be wasted otherwise.

Another example Hyperion’s CEO uses is extracting hydrogen from natural gas. He claims the method, called SMR (Steam Methane Reformation), has 90 percent of efficiency. Compared to thermal power plants that burn it and get only 35 percent of the chemical energy transformed into electricity, that would be an amazing gain.

What Kafantaris does not address is the origin of this methane. If it comes from dumps and other renewable sources of gas, that would be defensible. If he is referring to methane from fossil origins, being efficient would not make the cut unless the carbon left from SMR was trapped someway.

Is the Hyperion CEO right? Would an FCEV be the answer for the future of transportation in passenger cars? Or would fuel cells make sense just for heavy vehicles? We’ll leave this interesting discussion for our readers to have in the comments section below.

India’s Target 100 Million Tonnes of Coal Gasification by 2030

This 100 MT coal gasification will happen in three phases. In the first phase -- from 2020-2024 -- 4 million tonnes (MT) of coal will be gasified and around Rs 20,000 crore will be invested for the same.

India’s target to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030 will entail an investment of over Rs 4 lakh crore, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Monday.

Coal gasification is the process of producing syngas — a mixture consisting mainly of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, natural gas and water vapour — from coal.

“Coal gasification and liquefaction is no more an aspiration, but a requirement. For encouraging use of clean sources of fuel, government has provided for a concession of 20 per cent on revenue share of coal used for gasification. This will boost production of synthetic natural gas, energy fuel, urea for fertilisers and production of other chemicals,” Joshi said.

Joshi was addressing a webinar on coal gasification and liquefaction organised by the coal ministry.

This 100 MT coal gasification will happen in three phases. In the first phase — from 2020-2024 — 4 million tonnes (MT) of coal will be gasified and around Rs 20,000 crore will be invested for the same.

In the second phase — from 2020-2026 — 6 MT of coal will be gasified which will involve an investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

In the third phase — from 2022-2030 — 90 MT of coal will be gasified and Rs 3.6 lakh crore will be invested for the same.

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment for green initiatives in the sector, Joshi said coal gasification and liquefaction are on the government’s agenda and various actions have been taken for development of surface coal gasification.

A steering committee has been constituted in this regard under the chairmanship of V K Saraswat, member, NITI Aayog and comprising officials from the coal ministry.

Coal India also plans to set up at least three gasification plants (besides Dankuni) on build, own, operate (BOO) basis through global tendering and has signed pact with GAIL for marketing synthetic natural gas.

Joshi urged the attendees of the session to explore more about technologies and other aspects in the coal gasification sector, in line with the country’s SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.

This will help harness the nation’s reserves for maximum utilisation while heading on the path to sustainability as per global standards, he added.

The minister also said the response to commercial coal mining has been very good.

What Are the Work From Home Pitfalls and What Can You Do to Avoid Them?

For many people the ultimate dream is to escape from the rat race and work from home. To some people who have achieved this dream it has turned into the ultimate nightmare!

With the every day stresses of life, work and commuting, working from home can appear to be the way out, but it is not as easy and idyllic as it sounds. If you are seriously thinking about setting up in business on your own and working from home, what are the pitfalls and what can you do to avoid them?

Understanding Your Motivation

It can be too tempting to stay in bed for ‘a little longer’ when you are working at home. The need to get up and beat the early morning traffic or to be at your desk by 8.30am is missing when you only have a short walk to your new place of work.

If you are to be effective in your new work environment you have to find a motivator which is sufficiently strong enough to get you up and about and at your desk by your appointed time.

To find out what your motivator is cast your mind back to why you wanted to work from home in the first place. Was it to spend more time with the family? Was it to give you freedom to pursue other interests?

If you don’t find these strong enough to get you out of bed, find a financial reason. Visualise you and your family being thrown out of your house because you couldn’t up the mortgage payment! Keep this image in mind and the next time you find yourself staring at the bedroom ceiling raise this image and you’ll quickly find yourself at your desk!

Establish a Routine

We are all creatures of habit and a set routine can help keep us motivated and focused on the job in hand. Set yourself a starting time, a tea break and lunch break etc. A set routine can help you settle into your new role much more quickly than a ‘let’s see what happens today’ approach.

Without a working schedule, which includes a finite finishing time to the day, your working day will be unfocused and could stretch late into the night, ending what ever social life you may have.

You’re All Alone

Working from home can be a lonely existence. As human beings we are born to seek out contact with other humans. In an office environment there is daily contact, quick 10 minute chats at the coffee machine finding out what colleagues did the night before, and someone to celebrate a big sale with.

All of this is essential to making our lives feel complete and yet this is missing from a home-based business.

To overcome this feeling of isolation, which will be especially pronounced during your early months, you must establish a network of people who are in the same position as you. Agree that you will talk on the phone at least twice a week, and arrange to have lunch or a quick coffee once every 2 weeks.

Your family may not be the right people to talk over a business problem with, so you have to find someone who can relate to your successes and problems.

Get Out of The House

Staying in the house Monday to Friday without seeing the light of day is certainly not good for your health or state of mind. You may be so focused on your work that you convince yourself you cannot afford the time to leave the house. But this is a false economy.

You have to schedule time to move out and experience a different environment.

As well meeting your fellow home workers for a regular get together, join a health club, go for a swim once or twice a week, go to the cinema, check out your local Business Link to see what seminars they are running – anything to get you out of the house! Don’t get trapped into only working, eating and sleeping in your home.

Be Mobile

These days you can do most work-related tasks away from your home desk. Once your business is established invest in a laptop, PDA and a good mobile phone. Armed with these devices you can take your office with you and work from your garden, the local park, or even the library.

It doesn’t matter where, just as long as you are out of the house and being around the rest of the human race.

 Create an Office

If you have been used to working in a formal office environment all your working life, then switching to the kitchen table or the spare room can be an unwelcome distraction. To give you that discipline and focus designate a part of the house as your office. If you have a spare room or study then even better.

Buy a desk and office chair, filing cabinets and other office-style stationery. Remove all family and home-related items so this tells your mind that you are at work and not home.

Get Organised

In any office you have too many colleagues and clients visiting you to allow your work area to get cluttered. At home it’s different. Unless you are expecting clients on a regular basis then it’s too easy to allow your paperwork and filing to get out of hand.

The saying that a cluttered desk leads to a cluttered mind is true. Your efficiency and productivity will suffer unless you are organised. Buy filing cabinets, box files, waste paper bin, put up shelves, so that everything is in place.

Getting organised and being efficient also includes setting the ground rules with the family. They need to understand that you are at work and not at their beck and call for every little job that needs doing. Be firm and say no unless it is very urgent and requires immediate attention. Allow nothing to get in the way of your business.

Working from home can be a liberating experience, yet at the same time it can be dangerous unless properly handled. Before embarking on your home business, take time to plan and prepare how you are going to deal with the transition.

Done correctly, working from home can be a very attractive alternative to the daily grind of the office.

Four Tips to Help You Handle the Unexpected Disasters and Keep Your Business Running

Disasters or family tragedies can strike families in many forms – Mother Nature, sickness and even computer problems can cause major difficulties for your business. Do you have a plan of action on how you will handle your home-based business if disaster were to strike? If not, you absolutely need to.

Having a plan ensures that you can not only keep your business running, but decrease stress because you have already prepared for the unexpected.

Below are four tips to help you handle the unexpected.

1. Work around the events

Your customers will understand as long as you communicate with them.  Be honest that things may take a little longer than usual, but keep your customers updated as often as possible.  Communication is the key. Most people will understand the delay as long as they are aware of it.

If you get to the point where you cannot work or cannot finish a project, but sure to be clear and honest about the situation and try to make an arrangement that will be acceptable.  Also, let them know as soon as possible so they can prepare.  Don’t wait until the last minute to advise them of a potential problem.

If you’re struggling because of a child being sick, try to work when the child is sleeping and don’t stress yourself out to work at other times. Make a schedule of what needs to be done, so that you can accomplish as much as possible during these times.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

As moms, we tend to feel that we should be able to handle everything that is thrown at us. Unfortunately, this just isn’t always the case. There are times when we need to allow ourselves to ask for help.

When a tragedy occurs and you are simply overwhelmed, find someone who you trust and ask them for help. Many times, just having someone reply to customers on your behalf can take the pressure off your shoulders.

Allowing someone to help you when necessary can also be uplifting to them as they feel they can be a part of helping in a difficult situation. So don’t’ shy away from letting others know. We all benefit when we work together and help one another.

When our one-year old had surgery he didn’t handle the pain medication well. He was wide awake for the better part of two days. In this case, I knew ahead of time when the surgery would occur, but I had no idea what his recovery would entail.

It was impossible to work while he slept, because he wasn’t sleeping. I realized that I not only needed help business-wise, but I needed help with him as well so that I could get some rest.

While it was humbling to admit that I needed help, that I couldn’t do it all, it turned out as a great time spent with family that we would not have had if I hadn’t asked for help.

3. Prepare for the worst

Because we never know what the future holds, it is always better to be prepared. As the old saying goes, “Better safe than sorry.”

One of the best resources to help you prepare is the Home Office Recovery Plan: Disaster Preparedness for Your Home Office by authors Diana Ennen and Patty Gale. This e-book covers all the bases of getting a Disaster Recovery Plan in place now so that if disaster strikes your home business or an emergency arises, you are able to get your business back up and running quickly and smoothly.

Ennen states, “In my case, this guide has been a lifesaver as a resident of South Florida.  I have prepared for eight major hurricanes in the past two years with Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma taking a direct hit on Broward County where I live. I was without power for two weeks with Hurricane Wilma.  Had I not prepared, my clients would have suffered as would my business.”

Gale also knows the importance of this book having lived in New York after 9/11 and had the task of preparing a similar guideline for a company she was working with at the time.  Both know the importance in ensuring your business will withstand whatever this hurricane or any disaster (including a theft in the office or fire) has to offer.

4. Get a Plan

There are times when life becomes overwhelming and you simply aren’t able to accomplish everything on your own. It’s for these times that you need to have some type of log of what you do and what needs to be done.

Keep a spreadsheet of tasks that you do, how often they are done and mark them completed as you are able. Keep a list of passwords in a safe, secure place. Make sure that your family (or whoever may be helping you during this time) is able to carry on even in the event that you are away from home.

If possible, train someone that you trust to do the things that you do each day (at least the key things), so that when the unexpected arises you won’t be caught off-guard.

Tragedy comes in many shapes and forms, but if you are prepared much of the unnecessary stress can be avoided.  When tragedy strikes, you want to be focused on the important things in life, your family and you.  By advance planning you are able to do so.

Smart Answers to Should You Start Your Own Home Business Today

Home-based businesses are cropping up everywhere you look. People have decided that being their own boss is the way to go. There are thousands of advertisements, junk mail, and email saying you should start your own home business today!

But should you really start your own home business? Should you be your own boss? What are the risks to operating your own home business? What are the rewards? How many people are successful at operating their own home business? How do I get started? Should I be answering all those ads that say I am missing the opportunity of a lifetime?

These are some of the questions you may be asking yourself every time you see an ad about starting a business from home. In this article, I will try to help you answer them

Let’s start with that first question, “Should I start my own home business?” The answer to that question is different for everyone. If you hate working nine to five and hate working to make other people rich, then owning your own business might be your answer.

If you have some business skill, it helps, however, you do not need to know more than the basics about running your own business. You have to keep several things in mind. Depending on the type of home business you will be operating, do you have the room for it at your house?

Do you have a separate space where you can do your work without the normal everyday distractions of being at home. The children, your spouse, the TV, the yard that needs mowing and other things are all distractions that can cut into your workday. Also, understand you will still have to work every day. That doesn’t change just because you now have a home business.

The bottom line is you need to plan before you make the move to owning your own home business. Make sure it is what you really want and that you are ready to do what it takes to be a success.

The second question is much like the first, “Do I really want to be my own boss?” If you are self-motivated, if you are the type of person who learns fast. if you are a confident type of person, then the answer is yes. If you lack those qualities, then your answer may be no.

Again, that question is something only you can decide and it also depends on the type of business you choose to run. If it is a service oriented business you might have an easier time than with a sales-based home business if you are not the outgoing confident type of person.

Self-motivation is the one quality you can’t do without if you plan to start your own business, whether it will be a home-based business or something else. You will be the one that has to get you out of bed every day and you will be the one that has to tell you to get to work.

What are the risks to operating your own home business? They are several. You should not start your own home business right AFTER quitting your day job. Until your home business starts making money, you are likely going to have to keep your current job while building your home business.

Again, though, the risks are greater for some people than for others. What are your finances? How much is your monthly overhead? Is your income already stretched to the limits? A single person has a head start. A spouse who is not already working also has an advantage over the main breadwinner in starting a home business.

If you are currently working part-time and it costs you almost as much to go to work as you are making, then you may as well take a shot at owning your own business. It isn’t likely to be worse than continuing to pursue a dead-end job.

What are the rewards? The rewards of owning your own home business are many. If you have a family, even though you still have to work, knowing you are home and close by is a comfort to them.

Not having to commute back and forth to work is another plus. The gas and vehicle maintenance you save should be considered your first profits in your new home business.

The freedom of being your own boss is another reward. Knowing that it is you who will be making the decisions, who will be responsible for it’s success, and that it is you who decides everything is reward in itself.

Too many times when working for others, we see a better way to do things, but no one listens and you don’t have the power to make it happen. In your own home business, you will be making those decisions.

The money is the other reward. Why I say, “other”, is that it isn’t as important as the others. Of course you want your business to be successful and it has to make money to be a success, however, if money is your only motivation, I would still say you have less chance of succeeding then many others who are not solely money-motivated.

Choose something you truly like or love to do for your home business. Do it because it is what you want to do. Don’t choose the type of home business with the amount of income it will generate as the only or most important factor to consider.

If you choose something you love to do, it will be easier to motivate yourself and you will obviously enjoy it so much more. When you combine that with the other rewards, such as being close to your family, then the money becomes secondary.

At the very same time, you will also find that is the path to making more money. Because you chose something you like to do, you worked harder at it, and now you are making more money. That is how it works.

The last question is, “How many people succeed in their own home business?” My answer is, “Exactly the same number of people who chose to do something they enjoy.”

I hope this article has helped answer some questions you may have had about starting your own home business. I enjoy what I do and really hope that if nothing else, you remember to choose something you enjoy.

Importance of Identifying Why You Should Start Your Own Work at Home Business

There are countless reasons for you to start your own work at home business. I would venture to say that the main reason is to generate income. But what will you use the extra income for? The reasons may include getting out of debt, saving for a child's college education,  buying a home or car, early retirement, overcome insufficient income, or just to improve your lifestyle overall.

Whatever the reason, it is important to your success to identify it and stay focused on it. There are several reasons for this.

First off, identifying your why will get you started. I don't know how many people investigate starting a work at home business but never get started. A strong why will enable you to take that all important first step. If your why is strong enough, you can attain it and you will do what it takes to achieve it.

Secondly, when you identify your why, you have a goal to work towards and a target to aim at.  Staying focused on your why enables you to keep going as you are reminded why you are doing all the hard work involved in working at home.

Thirdly, identifying your why will help you get through those days when things look bleak. I can tell you from experience that there are times when you will want to quit.  There are many ups and downs when working at home. You will begin to doubt that that this just won't work. When you stay focused on your why, you are constantly reminded to not give up. In the end it will be worth it.

Fourthly, focusing on your why will enable you to battle the doubters. You know them. They are the people, often close to you, that tell you how foolish your undertaking is. They let you know up front that you are wasting your time. But your why, if you stay focused on it, will help you overcome these dissenters.

Fifthly, identifying your why will help you in making decisions about your business. There have been times when I had a decision to make about my work at home opportunity. Should I spend money on this, should I take the time to do that?  My why was always there, enabling me to make a decision that I would not have made had I not had a goal or vision that I was working towards.

Sixthly, your why will cause you to work harder and longer. There may be days when you just don't feel like working. You would rather sit in front of the TV or go somewhere or just take a nap. Once that “why” is engrained in your soul, you won't be able to ignore it.

You will spend the necessary time to work at becoming a success with your business. That doesn't mean that you ignore your family. It does mean that you will use more of your free time to work towards your goal.

Finally, identifying your why will cause you to be a success. If your goal is strong enough, you will succeed. A strong why will cause you to do pretty much whatever it takes to achieve it. There is nothing that will cause you to push forward like a strong why. The question is, "Have you identified yours?"

Few Pointers to Set Up Your Home Offices

When you work from home, one of the hardest things to get right is knowing where to do your work. In your bedroom? In a special home office? Well, here are a few pointers.

A Dedicated Space is Best

I really believe that you won't get far unless you set aside a space and use it for work only. Why? Well, if you use your work space for things other than work, then you'll get distracted by anything you leave there.

Other people in the family might become frustrated by not being able to use the space, or you might find that you simply don't have anywhere to put all the important pieces of paper you acquire, meaning that they get lost.

The Art of the Home Office

A home office is really what you want -- this really needs to be a dedicated room of a reasonable size. You shouldn't have too much trouble if you convert a small bedroom, as most bedrooms are actually surprisingly large once you take away the bed.

Your essentials for a home office are a desk, chair, computer, filing cabinet and phone/fax. If you don't have spare ones of these lying around then you should buy them used, or from some kind of discount store -- don't spend a cent more than you need to on your office furniture and equipment, at least to begin with. Still, though, do try to find things that don't look too bad, and that match.

Do make sure that you have everything in the room that you'll need for your business, and that your equipment is good enough that you'll be able to use it for long periods of time without it becoming painful.

If you plan to do a lot of phoning, for example, buy a headset so that you can do it hands-free. It's also worth spending just a little extra on that chair, if you're going to be sitting on it a lot.

You should also make sure that the room is well-lit and decorated in a style you like: one that says 'serious', but not 'dull, terrible work'. Keep it at a comfortable temperature, with good ventilation. Many people like to make their home office visibly different to the rest of their house, by having a differently-coloured carpet or wooden floor, or painting the walls an entirely different colour.

Whatever you do, though, I have no doubt that it'll be better than 99% of the corporate offices out there. The most important thing is that you don't spend too much, but that you make sure to solve any problems you have with your space as soon as they come up.

A Whole Other Building

One thing that some people like to do when they set up home offices is to make it completely separate from their house: a business annex. This could be expensive -- for goodness' sake don't build a whole other building if you don't have something like a shed or garage to convert -- but it is also one of the most effective ways to work from home.

It's not so much a 'home office' as an office that you've built right next to your home -- and it gives you a much clearer sense of when you're working and when you're not.

This option is especially worth considering if you do a manual trade, especially if you already have some kind of workshop space. I knew a carpenter who saved himself all sorts of headaches when he moved his home office away from his bedroom and into his existing workshop in his garage.

A Question of Tax

When you're organising your home office, don't forget about tax. The area of your house that you do business in should be tax-deductible, and so should any equipment you buy or other work you have done.

Don't use it as an excuse to get carried away, but do remember that you're not spending quite as much as you think. As long as you don't go overboard, your home office will be one of the most important investments you will make -- as anyone who's ever tried to work from home without one can tell you.

How to Deal With People That You Don't Know and That Don't Know You When Working at Home?

I just learned a valuable lesson. I had a person sign up to learn more about my work at home business. She came in  through a coop I was participating in and was a bit confused as to why she received communication from the person who ran the coop as well as me. She simply wanted to know who I was.

I responded to her in my normal, witty manner. The problem was that she didn't know me and she wasn't impressed with my response. In fact, she was actually insulted. She was kind enough to remind me of the old saying," You never have a second chance to make a good first impression."

As I thought about this I came to realize that when dealing with people that you don't know and that don't know you,  you really need to take care in how you respond and interact with others. So, I wrote a few "Follow Up Etiquette Tips" that seem appropriate.

Tip 1: Respond quickly. Too often we may receive an e-mail or have a message on our answering machine that we just put off responding to. That person was kind of enough to take the time to learn more about what we are offering.

We owe it to them to respond to them as quickly as possible. After all, it will be a benefit to us to do so.

Tip 2: Take the time to think out a good response to the  question. Be prepared before you return the call. Read and reread a response to an e-mail. Make sure you have answered the question or be as prepared as possible to do so.

Tip 3: Don't try to be too clever or witty with your response. Although you may try to be funny, the person you are dealing  with may take it a different way and actually be insulted.

Tip 4: Do not request delivery and read receipts. Simply ask the person the body of the e-mail to let you know that  they got your message.

Tip 5: Don't use abbreviations. There are many e-mail  abbreviations used in order to save time in typing. But many of them are confusing and can be misunderstood.

Tip 6: Keep is short, simple and to the point. Remember, a person's time is valuable. They want there question answered in as little writing as possible. They don't want to read a novel.

Tip 7: Be courteous and polite. Even if you are asked a question that you have already answered or that the answer seems obvious, take the time to explain it. Do not make the other person feel "stupid" for asking the question.

There are many other "etiquette" guidelines. These are just a few that I have personally learned. The bottom line is this: When someone wants to know about you and your business, you owe it to them to respond quickly, clearly, and professionally.

After all, not only does it help them, it helps you as you deal with someone who may be your next team member.

Important Ways to Make Sure You Don't Become Scammed

The ads are so tempting, and just think -- what if you could make hundreds of dollars a day working from home? Unfortunately, people are losing money every day to work at home scams. Don't become a victim. Here are some ways to make sure you don't become scammed!

You know you're just about to get scammed by a work-at-home ad when...

· The very first line states you can make hundreds of dollars a week working from home.

· There is no experience needed.

· You can work just a few hours a week and still make a bundle of money.

· There is lots of CAPITALIZATION AND !!!!!! used in the ad.

· You read an extremely vague ad. You haven't a clue what the business is about; but boy, could you be making the bucks.

· You're asked to call a 900# for more information.

· For a fee, a company will send you a list of businesses that are looking for home workers.

· You are forced to make a decision immediately and are made to feel stupid if you say no to their offer.

How to Check A Company Out

Whether you have those funny feelings about the claims of a company or not, do some background research on them.

· Hire a lawyer. This may seem like a waste of money, but in the long run it could really save you some financial heartache.

· Call the Better Business Bureau (in the state the company resides in) to see if there have been any complaints against the company.

· Ask the company if you can talk to any of their happy customers. Please be aware that companies can and will give you false customers to talk to. If these people sound way too happy, I would be a little leery.

Questions You Should Ask If You Are Thinking About Buying A Business Opportunity

Find out from your sponsor, in writing, what is involved with this business; such as: Are you able to return merchandise if it doesn't sell? Is there a money back guarantee? How long have they been in business for? (if it's under a year, I would again be very leery).

What is your total cost of this business opportunity, including fees, supplies, and equipment? Will you be paid on salary or commission and how often and who will pay you? Ask the program sponsor to write down every step of the business.

What To Do If You Become The Victim Of A Scam

First you need to write the company that you feel has ripped you off telling them you would like your money back. If they don't agree with you, then you need to let them know you plan to notify officials. The following people should be notified:

· If you read about this work-at-home scheme in a magazine, let the editor know you've been ripped off by these people and you're not happy about it.

· The Attorney General's Office in your state or in the state where the company is located.

· National Fraud Information Center. Call them if you feel you are a victim of a "get-rich-quick" or an "easy money" scheme. Check out their web site for daily alerts or new scams. 1-800-876-7060

· Your local Consumer Protection Offices.

· Your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the BBB in the state of the scammer.

· Postmaster. Notify if you received the information through the mail.

· The Federal Trade Commission. While the FTC cannot resolve individual disputes, the agency can take action if there is evidence of a pattern of deceptive or unfair practices. To register a complaint, write to: Correspondence Branch, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580

Ways to Stop Being Taken Advantage of Work at Home Plans

More than likely you have seen them cropping up all over the internet: work from home schemes promising participants vast sums of money for selling a product, stuffing envelopments, clicking ads, making phone calls, etc. The plans are as varied as they are innovative.

Unfortunately, many are scams meant to extract cash from your wallet and certain to leave you feeling miserable and stupid. So, just how can you make sure that a work from home plan is legitimate? By continuing to read on for some suggestions to help you avoid being cheated.

Better Business Bureau

Check with your local Better Business Bureau {BBB} to determine whether the company has had any complaints levied against it. If it is an out of state concern, check with the BBB in the area [state] where the company is based.

State Attorney General’s Office

Every state has an Office of the Attorney General and in most cases it is this office that is tasked with investigating complaints against companies. Some states allocate this responsibility to their Bureau of Consumer Affairs agency or similar department.

Online Forums, Blogs, etc.

Google a search on the internet for the company’s name and narrow the results further by including negative words such as complaint, scam, judgment, etc. If a company is up to no good, likely that information has been published somewhere. Caution: too much praise about a company could be a company “plant” placed online to create a positive spin about their operation. Conversely, bad news could be a single disgruntled person. Get as much additional and independent information before making a determination whether something you read online is actually true.

Personal Investment

If you have to pay for the product, i.e. to receive a list of companies providing information work information, etc. this should be a warning flag to you. Any outlay of cash on your part should raise some concern.

MLM

Some work at home businesses are nothing more than multi level marketing [MLM] schemes. This means you make a percentage of the sales of people you bring in to the business below you. Not all MLM schemes are illegal...unethical may be another matter!

In all, exercise extreme caution before agreeing to any work from home plan. If a work from home plan sounds too good to be true, than likely it is false.  Ask hard questions and do not sign a contract before letting a legal professional [of your choice] review the plan.

Over the years, the history of human race has replaced many significant changes in a continuous quest of improving life style. Past few years have characterized by such changes in every aspect of society. Certainly, many new innovations and improvised technologies are altered the world forever.

And perhaps, the most significant contribution by advance technology has come from internet. Gone are the traditional ways of earning income. There has been rise in home based business income opportunities emerging from this new global sphere.

If we have a closer look at a recorded history, then it has been a conventional trend that people who wish to work for a salary are compelled to work at the location of client or of company they are working for.

Although that concept of self employment had been present in past, it wasn’t until the 90’s when internet came of age and presented diverse opportunities and platforms for people to work from home while having access to the world through their personal computers.

Home Business

Home business is an ideal platform which allows people to work from home and get paid handsomely for the efforts they put in. It is quite obvious that the sites claiming to offer best plan don’t know you personally. They don’t know your likes and dislikes. They don’t know about your passion. They don’t know about targets- short term or long term.

They don’t know your expectancy level of income and they don’t know how much time you can work for. The lack of this knowledge can pose a great threat to your search for such opportunities.

So, in order to find a perfect suitable plan or opportunity you have to do some kind of research and find opportunities of your own. You can even search for the research opportunities with their supported statistics. This thing can narrow down your search for the best home based opportunity.

The best part while searching for such business can be considering your own hobbies, your own likes. Just ask yourself how do you spend your idle time? There are so many hobbies like book reading, ornamental fish keeping, shopping, watching sports, keeping pets or even finding a good deal. Surely, you will be much more comfortable at one of those hobbies.

These fields can range from learning yoga to playing guitar and from purchasing dirt free airline tickets to movie or digital recording.

2. Affiliate Programs

Is Running a Work From Home Business Right for You? It is Easier Than You Think

Let’s talk digits.  Let’s talk number of digits and why exactly you currently have no connection to them.  Here we go: 10.  10 digits that are all in one specific number.  The number is this: $1,000,000,000.  That’s a trillion dollars.

I wish I had one of those great exemplary anecdotes about bills being stacked side by side and being able to stretch from here to whichever appropriate location.  But, I’m thinking that its not necessarily necessary and that you get the general idea that a trillion dollars is a lot.

So what about it?  That’s the revenue generated by work from home businesses, that’s what.

What I’m saying is that there are sometimes, at least I can certainly speak for myself, preconceived notions about work from home businesses that don’t have too many nice things to say.  Scams is a word that pops up immediately.

I think that frivolous and a silly last alternative, which will offer the business’ operator not much more than a homemade business card with the word “President” under his/her name (which in a society that seems to hold superficial status in such high esteem, maybe that’s not nothing, but really something) to show for their efforts.

But, a trillion dollar economy seems to indicate somebody’s buying something; and somebody else is making a living.

So, the question is: is running a work from home business right for you?  Its about the aspects of the running your own business from home that will ultimately determine your ability to make the correct decision.

You’re certainly able to work with whichever type of area of interest that you may have from books to computers to advertising.  You can do sales or service.  And the bottom line is that the money is there.

The money is there and you can get in on it if you feel a home business is for you.  So make up your own mind and get going.

Take More Action to Get Your Goals More Quickly

When you work from home, it is very likely that you are self employed and more likely an entrepreneur. If you are working a job from home this article will not have the importance or impact that it will for the entrepreneur. If you are an entrepreneur that wants to work from home, then I would hope that you’ve done a bit of homework (pardon the play on words).

In your homework, you hopefully sat down and thought about what you would like to accomplish as an entrepreneur. If you haven’t done that, then please go to some of my previous articles that are searchable by my name.

So you have sat down and written out what your goals are for your work from home business. Great! You have gotten off on the right foot. Let’s also assume that as an entrepreneur you are fairly ambitious. You have set a goal or destination that is unexplored territory for you.

I think that’s excellent – why set a goal or try and get excited about something you’ve already done? Let’s head for uncharted territory.

Now guess what. Your goal or destination lies in the realm of the unknown – at least to you. Now it is going to require that you use thinking other than the thinking that got you to where you are now, to move forward and attain your goals.

Einstein said “the current set of problems we face will not be solved by the same level of thinking that got us there”. Neither will you get to where you want to be with the same level of thinking and effort that you have done before.

So to reach your goal you must do at least these two things. You must seek out thoughts that are different than the ones you’ve had before and you must take actions you have never taken before. To get those thoughts, you must somehow mastermind with people that are either at the point where you want to be, or at least they are much closer to it than you are.

Find other people that work from home and have had great success with it. Maybe they are in the company you work with, or if you truly work alone, then get books and tapes from people who have done it. Maybe even get some coaching from someone who has had success working from home.

Once you realize the mindset and thoughts that are necessary to get to your destination, you must take action. Guess what the outcome will be if you fail to take any action because of fear in your life? You guessed it – failure. So you must take action to reach your goals.

Here is a great guideline for decision making: First, will the action I am considering move me in the direction of my goals? Second, will the action I’m about to take cause harm or violate the rights of anyone? If the answers are yes and no respectively, then you MUST take the action – and do so IMMEDIATELY!

This is the method of operation of successful people that I know personally who work from home. To get to your goals more quickly, take more action. If you have fear, take more action. What is the alternative? Think about it.

These Pros and Cons of Working at Home Can Help You Decide Whether You Would Go for It or Not

With the advent of information technology and the Internet, work-from-home schemes had been a continuous trend for so many years now, and it seems to be getting better each day.

So, here you are trying your way to get out of the traffic because you are bound to be late for work again. And when you get down to start your work, you will realize that it is time again to pack your things up and start heading for home. That is another traffic you have to get through again.

Looks like a pretty wearisome routine? Think again.

No wonder why more and more people are enticed to try working from home. They only not save more money from commuting and driving but they are able to work better because they are not too tired to get things done.

So, if you have been contemplating on whether you would go and try working at home or not, then it’s better to check some of the pros and cons first so as to help you decide whether you would go for it or not:

Pros

1. Convenience

This is the very edge of most work-from-home arrangements. You don’t have to wake up early every single day just to beat the bus or get through a heavy traffic.

2. Encourages safety.

There had been reports wherein most accidents involve people who are in a hurry to get to work. There are thousand of incidents where people get hurt or harshly hurt just because they want to get to work at once so as not to be late. All of these things get down on one main point: they are all in a hurry to get to work.

Whereas, if you work from home, chances are you will not be experiencing these dangerous incidents lurking around. You don’t have to be in a hurry to beat the traffic. You don’t have to press the accelerator faster just to get into the meeting earlier. All you have to do is to sit back, relax and contemplate on how you will start your work today right in the comfort of your home.

3. Gives more time for your family.

In many instances, people who work in the office will have little time for their family. This is because they will be spending almost half of their time commuting back and fort, from their house to office and vice-versa.

Whereas, if they work from home, half of the time spent in commuting will be dedicated more to the family, keeping the bond alive and the love overflowing.

Cons

1. It’s not an eight-to-five job.

This means that since you work from home, the timeframe is not strictly set unlike what you have on a regular job.

Moreover, your client sometimes gets to think that you are available 24 hours a day because it is so easy to get in touch with you. All they have to do is to call you or get you online. What’s worse, they won’t even think twice in calling you at midnight just because there’s some work that need to be hurriedly done.

2. There’s no definite distinction.

This because your home is your office and your office is your home. In this manner, it is really difficult to set a clear distinction on getting into an office mode and eventually switching to home mode if needed.

Most often than not, you get to work most of the time when you work from home because there are no time frame to follow, no buzzers to beat, and no deadlines to meet.

3. It’s even harder to set discipline at home.

This is because you can clearly see that your home office is just beside your bed, your computer near your night table, and your phone just a few inches from you.

If people find it so hard to wake up in the morning just to get to work, it is doubly harder when working from home. People who works from home always tend to think that they can do it a little later since there wouldn’t be no boss checking out if you are late.

So, if you really want to decide whether you want to work from home, it’s all up to you now. The bottom line is that whether it is from home or in the office, as long as you are well compensated, then there wouldn’t be any problem at all.

How to Spot Work-at-Home Opportunities Scams?

When you are considering taking advantage of working at home you will want to be aware of the many schemes that exist in the work-at-home industry. Many people begin working at home because they want to have the opportunity to make money on their own terms, without having to deal with a boss to pay them or to set their hours.

Well while that is the best decision for some people who have a specific talent, this may be a very scary time for those who have not yet decided which avenue of a work-at-home business is the best for them.

Many work-at-home opportunities offer you the promise of a large gain in money but unfortunately turn out to be nothing more than a scam to get your money. These promises are intentionally made to appeal to you and your ideas, it is important to understand that not all of these opportunities are able to deliver the promises they make.

Many of the people who advertise these types of “scams” fail to mention that you will be required to work many long hours without any pay whatsoever. Additionally, they often fail to let you know all of the costs that are associated with undertaking this type of work-at-home opportunity.

Many of these schemes will required that you spend a good deal of the money you have of your own on items like advertisement, photocopies, paper, stamps, envelopes, or any other type of equipment or supplies that may be needed to properly perform the job. Two basic types of schemes that are the most popular are stuffing envelopes and work doing assembly or crafts.

The envelope stuffing industry often advertises that you are to provide a small fee, then they will provide you with information on how stuffing envelopes at home can earn you money. After you have sent in your hard earned money, you are likely going to find out there was never any real employment opportunities to provide to you.

Instead, you will possibly get a preformatted letter that gives you the instructions to place an add into local newspapers or a magazines. What this means is that the only real money making opportunity you have, is to send the same offer and hope they others reply to you.

When considering a work-at-home opportunity you should make sure that it is a real and viable opportunity. Know the tasks you will be required to perform, what the salary will be, how the salary is based, who pays you, when you will get your first pay, what it costs, and what you will get in return for your investment.
