China's Aiways Will Produce Hydrogen Fuel Cell Supercars From Methanol With 745 Miles Driving Range

Aiways, a Chinese automobile manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell cars, is constructing a factory in Gaoping, Shanxi Province, China that will produce innovative hydrogen fuel cells operating on the principle of reforming methanol. The Chinese startup hopes to offer these new energy cells as a viable alternative to the more conventional electric and hydrogen-based designs.

Roland Gumpert – a subordinate brand of Aiways – already has a sports car called Nathalie that runs on similar methanol tech. RG unveiled the Nathalie as a prototype a couple of years ago, following up with the production of the track-only Nathalie Race and the announcement of its road-legal counterpart this March. The latter is scheduled to emerge in Europe next year priced at €407,000 for the First Edition trim.

Gumpert Nathalie has an impressive range of 510 miles (821 km) at an average speed of 75 mph (121 km/h) or up to 745 miles (1,199 km) on Eco mode.

The sports car comes driven by four wheel-mounted electric motors deriving their power from a 60-kWh battery, which in turn takes it from a 65-liter tank filled with 60-percent methanol. The ground gets hit with 544 PS (400 kW), enabling the car to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 2.5 seconds and max out at 300 km/h (186 mph).

The RG Nathalie will be produced in Shangrao, China, and Ingolstadt, Germany, where its subsidiary called Gumpert Aiways Automobile is located.

Methanol can be produced from natural gas, coal and renewable sources such as municipal waste, biomass and recycled carbon dioxide. Methanol – CH3OH – is four parts hydrogen, one part oxygen and one part carbon.
