FuelCell Energy | We Offer Fuel Cell Carbon Capture for Your New/Old Coal & Natural Gas Power Plant

Utilizing SureSource power plants to separate CO₂ from the flue gas of natural gas or coal-fired power plants while producing ultra-clean power; rather than consuming it like other capture technologies

We delivers efficient, affordable and clean solutions for the supply, recovery and storage of energy. We design, manufacture, undertake project development, install, operate and maintain megawatt-scale fuel cell systems, serving utilities, industrial and large municipal power users with solutions that include both utility-scale and on-site power generation, carbon capture, local hydrogen production for transportation and industry, and long duration energy storage. With SureSource installations on three continents and millions of megawatt hours of ultra-clean power produced, we are a global leader with environmentally responsible power solutions.

HOW IT WORKS

The exhaust flue gases from the coal or gas fired system are fed into the cathode side of the fuel cell, replacing the ambient air used in typical applications, and the CO₂ in the exhaust is transferred to the anode side, where it is much more concentrated and easy to separate. The CO₂ from the anode exhaust stream is purified by chilling the stream to extract CO₂ liquid. This enables a cost effective capture as the purified CO₂ can then be transported by pipeline for Enhanced Oil Recovery applications or underground storage.

AFFORDABLE & PROVEN SOLUTION
  • Achieves costs below Department of Energy (DOE) target of $40/ton
  • Destroys pollutants and prevents the release of green-house gases while increasing overall power output
    • A separate reaction occurs in the fuel cell stacks which destroys approximately 70% of the smog producing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the coal or gas fired system, reducing the cost of NOx removal equipment for plant operators and benefiting society with cleaner air.
  • Produces Additional Power. To capture 90% of CO2 from a 500 MW coal plant, the power output increases 80% to 900 MW, with a cost of electricity rate of $0.08 cents/kWh and a 78% decrease in pollutants.
  • Generates return on capital with energy revenue streams
  • Extends life of existing coal-fired power plants
  • Allows low carbon utilization of natural gas resources
  • Proven technology with billions of kilowatt hours total of power generated from SureSource plants across three continents

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is used for industrial processes such as petrochemical industry applications, transportation fuel and an energy carrier to support long-duration energy storage. The ability to cleanly, efficiently and economically generate hydrogen has market value, particularly with a scalable solution that can be sized appropriately for different market needs and opportunities.

FuelCell Energy has developed a solid-state electrochemical hydrogen separation (EHS) system for the highly efficient and selective separation of hydrogen from dilute process gases generated by petrochemical companies that is capable of producing high purity hydrogen with a scalable solution.

The technology provides a unique way to separate hydrogen from clean natural gas or renewable biogas in a process with relatively low energy consumption and without the need for pressurization. Hydrogen can also be compressed in the same process, using just minimal energy and avoiding the use of mechanical rotating equipment. The high efficiency of the EHS process and lack of moving parts results in low operating costs compared to current hydrogen separation technologies. Sustainability is an added benefit as using an electrochemical process instead of combustion via steam reforming leads to a low or zero carbon solution virtually free of criteria pollutants that uses just a fraction of the water of conventional technologies.
