Being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease

Today I am going to cover the ways you can be diagnosed for Crohn's Disease.

There are several ways a person can be diagnosed with Crohn's Disease...

Usually, if you are experiencing some of the symptoms covered in my previous newsletter you'll make an appointment with the doctor.

Just through a physical exam, your doctor should tell if there is something more going on than just a stomach virus or a case of food poisoning.

Through discussion of your symptoms your doctor can help you take the next step toward a diagnosis of Crohn's Disease either being ruled-in or ruled-out.

The next step is to undergo blood and stool tests. Through testing, your doctor can determine how to proceed. If your doctor suspects a problem in the gastrointestinal tract, she may recommend a specialist that may be able to help unravel the mystery further.

A barium enema x-ray is the medical test that can pinpoint whether or not you have Crohn's disease. This test will determine if there is the presence of Crohn's Disease in the intestine. The colon is filled with material containing barium by pouring the material through a tube inserted into the anus. The barium-filled colon then
shows up clearly on  X-rays.

If the barium enema x-rays aren't definitive, your doctor might choose to perform an endoscopic exam. This test is somewhat invasive and generally patients are put under anesthesia for the duration of the procedure. This test is highly reliable in determining the presence of Crohn's Disease.

I hope you found this information about the various ways that you can be diagnosed with Crohn's Disease useful.

In my next article I'll be talking about some of the complications of Crohn's Disease.
