Last month, my wife, Anne Doe, took me to Las Vegas because she had to go for a business convention. Needless to say, she writes for an guide to casinos and I hate gambling. But then, she likes it and this supports us too, so I went along without any hassle. At first I was depressed, but then as I asked around and looked around, I ended up having more fun in Las Vegas than I would have thought. And no. I did not enter a single casino while I was there.

Entertainment:

One of the greatest things about Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City (but especially Las Vegas) is the number of shows that are available. You can get to watch top class comedians like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Tim Allen and even the likes of Bill Cosby and Chris Rock. If you are into music you can watch female singers like Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyonc?, male performers like Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Snoopy Dog and bands like Oasis and Bon Jovi. I could go on and on but the list is endless. If you are into magic you can watch magicians like David Copperfield do their thing meters from you. Whatever you like, you can find it here from Western music to oldies to Jazz, Rock, Heavy Mettle to Trance. All you have to do is look at the itenary offered during your visit.

Food:

Chinese to Japanese to Korean to Jewish and even Vegetarian and proper meat eating establishments await your every delight in Vegas. Do not opt for the cheap and oily fried dishes served for free while you play. Stop a while and take in the delightful scenery and smells of East Asian or European dishes. What is wondrous is that you get to see man's ability to mix. A real melting pot if I may say so myself.

But is that all what casino cities like Las Vegas are about? Do you have to remain in the city to really and truly enjoy your stay?

Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon:

Book yourself a seat on any of the many sightseeing tours available and go and watch the architectural marvel that is Hoover Dam built over the Grand canyon which is also a grand sight to see by itself. Black Canyon is another must see as is Lake Mead which is so beautiful just because it is a body of water all surrounded by desert-like nature. 

Colorado River:

While looking at the Dam and Canyon is from above, to see the true beauty of the river, you have to go down. The Colorado river is excellent for river-rafting and water sports, but you do not have to take part if it is not your thing. Instead just sit back and enjoy another of nature's marvels.

Bonnie Springs:

Who can not resist going to one of the old towns like those in the Western gun slinging movies? Your destination needs to be Old Nevada. There you can delight in an old western town right in the middle of Red Rock Canyon. They host western shootouts too so come prepared, partner!

Conclusion:

I could go on and on about other attractions like the theme park in Circus Circus, the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and Mt. First, let me give you an introduction. The basic types of light include LED, HID, and Xenon. Each, of course, has its special characteristics and which one is right for you depends on your diving goals. Let’s examine each type of scuba light on its own merits.

LED

LED stands for light-emitting diode. These lights are long lasting and use very little power, which makes them quite useful to divers.

HID

High-intensity discharge lights are useful if you need more light at longer distances. They tend to be more expensive but worth the extra price if you are charting darker territory.

XENON

Xenon lights use the highest intensity available for more light, longer durations and super super power. These are the underwater lights for the experts.

If your dive sessions tend to be for hours on end then you want a light that can stand the test of time. You want one whose battery isn’t going to fizz out while you explore those coral reefs.

For divers who like to explore dark, unexplored corners of the sea, you’ll want something that offers some brightness. What sense does it make to go into an underwater cave with a flashlight that only operates at 2 lumens?

Are you a photographer? Do you like to shoot pictures of marine wildlife? Then you’ll definitely want a head lamp. Get something that has enough power to illuminate at greater distances, particularly if you plan to photograph exotic sea life or dangerous creatures like sharks and other aqua predators. It’s imperative that you have your hands free to fiddle with the camera.

If you dive in places where there is a possibility of bumping into other divers then you should probably wear a beacon. This lets other divers see you before they harpoon you. Put one on your back because you will not always meet other divers eye to eye.

But you’ll also want to wear one on the front side of your body as well. If possible, put one on your head and one on your foot or leg as many divers like to scale the floors of the waters in which they dive. You want your beacon to be seen from any direction – front, back, side, top or bottom.

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a diving light, next to safety, is personal style and taste. What makes you comfortable? Do you like holding the pistol grip in your hand and pretend you are James Bond under the sea?

Or do you prefer having your hands free? Do like your light bouncing around as you dive as they tend to do with a lanyard, or do you prefer to have them clipped to your wetsuit or other gear?

Travel Planning and Preparation: Things to Do When Going on Your Next Camping Trip

This means you need to set down and think about things.

• What kind of camping trip will you take?

These are basic simple things to think about.   Your camping equipment needs will vary depending on where you will be camping.  Camping on the beach has different needs then camping in the mountains.  You should always start your foray into camping small.  Take a day trip somewhere close to your home.  Check out the surroundings and the camp sites.  Get an understanding of what the equipment needs will be. 

Once you are comfortable on your day trips you can move to an overnight camping trip. This requires you to think harder about what your needs will be.  You must have food, shelter, and the equipment to cook and keep your food.  You need to be able to see at night and be able to start and sustain a fire.  You should think about what you will do in inclement weather.

The initial cost of acquiring all of your camping gear can be quite high.  Remember that and make your purchases over time.  Watch for sales for camping gear in the off season.  You can find great deals on your camping equipment this way.  You can also find great deals on the Internet.

Camping has a great sense of community and people often share their experiences and great places to camp.  You can find many such sites on the Internet where people share everything that is camping.  The most important thing about camping is to ensure that you are prepared.  There is no such thing as being over prepared.  

It would be a tough camping trip if you planned to go to the desert on a trek and forgot to bring water.  Camping is great fun for the whole family.  Remember; always be prepared when going on your next camping trip.

I have a number of favorites, however, my all time favorite is Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody.

Since living in an extremely cold climate means taking your Corvette off the road in the winter months, a winter car is a must.

So in September we started looking for a car for winter and found a beauty, a 2 door dark green 1976 Lincoln Town Car, 5035 lbs with a nice big V-8 (460) that rode like a dream, and talk about hauling a**. I can still remember the night we picked it up. With only having the Corvette, Chuck did most of the driving. Since I hadn’t driven in a while, I told him to take it easy since I hadn’t driven in the dark for quite sometime. Well, anyone who has even driven this car knows that 30 feels like you are crawling and before you know it you are up to 50 or 60. So, yep, you guessed it, there we were on the back roads and Chuck is punching the Corvette to keep up with me. I was in heaven, with  all that horsepower and car around me again. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Corvette, but since my first car was a 2 door 1962 Chevy Belair being in a big car again put me in seventh heaven, and this one was even bigger and faster than my first one. 

Of course when we got home Chuck had some choice words for me, however, it all turned out all right. And what a winter car it was, we never got stuck and believe you me Rochester gets a lot of snow. Watched many a car spin it’s wheels in the parking lot, while that big Lincoln plowed through it like it was nothing. Never missed a day of work in it either and it started up even at minus 40 and 50 wind chill, and the heat, ah the wonderful warm air it put out, just couldn’t beat it. It did yeoman service for us.

We had the Lincoln for our three remaining winters in Rochester, before moving out west. We sold it to a college student going to school in NJ. It was still in tip top shape, just some minor rust, which is  just part and parcel of living on the East coast with cold, snow and salt. 

Would love to find another, as we would snap it up in a minute. While not a hot rod Lincoln, it still brings back very very fond memories.

Things You Need to Check in Your Car Before Go Through a Journey Through the Desert

It is important that you do take some time to check your vehicle before you actually go through a journey through the desert. This is because the excess heat on your vehicle could make it act up. Also, you would not want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere without any means of communicating for help to anyone. 

If you are planning on driving through the desert to some location, automobile experts suggest that you inform somebody about your plans. Let them know when you are going, when you should be expected to return, as well as where is the exact location of your destination. 

You should also get a full service tune up before you start on your voyage. You should also bring your car for service at least a week or two weeks before your planned trip. That way, if there are any things that need to be worked on, the personnel could start on it. While at it, have the personnel check your battery terminals for corrosion. If there are, these should be cleaned with a wire brush that has been dipped in baking soda and water. Also add distilled water to your battery if your batteries are sealed. 

Go through your tires as well. Inspect for wear. Also, maintain the proper air pressure on your tires. You should know the right amount of pressure by checking your car owner’s manual. Your radiator should also be checked for leaks. 

As per your coolant, check for strength in the radiator overflow reservoir. You should be able to do this using a hydrometer. Make sure that the antifreeze is clean and that it is filled up to the proper level as indicated in your car. Now, if the coolant has not yet been replaced or flushed for the last 15,000 miles, this would be the right time to do so.

How to Drive Safely on a Muddy Road?

 

Summer may be coming soon however there is still a chance of having rain. In fact, rain could fall anytime without your knowing. And sometimes, light rain could turn into a torrential downpour that could leave you cold and miserable while driving on some highway. 

Rain also is one of the causes of many road accidents. This is mostly because of the road and driving conditions. The roads become slippery. And oftentimes, the rain blurs the visibility of the driver. 

After a long dry season and the rain starts to fall, be very careful if you are caught on the road. Engine oil and grease has built up on the road during the dry season. Now when these are mixed with the water from rain, it can make the road extremely slick and slippery. 

When it is starting to rain and you have to travel somewhere, make sure that you start driving with a little time allowance. This is because you would not want to start speeding through the roads in the rain. Also, if you need to brake, make sure that you do it with less force. Sudden or strong braking could lead you to skid and you know what else happens after that. 

If the rain is pouring harder than you thought it would be and you observe that your visibility is lessened because of the downpour, do not hesitate to turn on your headlights. Added lights could actually help you see the road better and these also assist other motorists to know that you are on the road also. However, do not try to be brave and drive through a great downpour when you simply cannot see the road. Pull over and wait for the rain to subside. There is no harm in doing that. In fact, it could save not only your life but other lives as well.

Put on Your Best Leather Motorcycle Jacket and Come on Out to Mango's to Start Our First North Florida Road Trip

With bike week just around the corner, bikers from all over the country are pulling their motorcycles out of winter storage and cleaning up their leathers in anticipation of a motorcycle rally like no other. While Daytona is definitely the place to be the week of March 5th, Florida offers some great stretches of road through pristine landscapes to some great biker destinations. 

About an hour and a half north of Daytona on A1A lies the bustling beach community of Jacksonville Beach, which is where we will meet for the start of our road trip- because, well, that’s where I’m from! On any given day you’ll find bikes and bikers parked and hanging out at the Jax Beach Pier parking lot. Just across the street is the famed biker bar Mango’s, a great place for bikers to meet, have some good home cooking and shoot some pool. Summer weekends will generally find some heavy metal band performing outside on the covered deck. So put on your best leather motorcycle jacket and come on out to Mango's to start our first north Florida road trip.

Our first day trip will start from Jax Beach and head north on A1A to Fernandina Beach, a quaint little island town with its own unique attitude. If you follow A1A north, after bearing left at Mayport Naval Station, you will be cruising through the marshlands at the mouth of the St. Johns River and come to a dead end at the ferry in Mayport Village. A traditional fishing village, this is where most of north Florida gets their seafood. Shrimp boats, party boats, and deep sea charters line the docks, and you can even take a gambling cruise from here. If you’re hungry, there’s an old wooden shack sitting on the water that serves some of the best seafood available. Singletons is not much to look at, but it’s been there forever and people drive for miles to sit on the water enjoying the freshest of Florida seafood, while watching the pelicans scrounge for theirs.

Taking the ferry across the river, you’ll once again pick up A1A heading north. To your right you’ll soon see a huge barren sandbar that was formed by the northern jetties at the mouth of the St. Johns. On the eastern edge are the jetties, the Atlantic Ocean, and a beach that is packed with babes of all shapes and sizes. The western side has a lagoon and the Fort George River inlet. A very wide beach at low tide, vehicles have been swallowed up and swept away by the Atlantic because of people parking just a little too close to the water, and taking a walk in the dunes. A great place for jet skiing, swimming, fishing and surfing, Huguenot Park also has a campground with primitive and RV camp sites and showers.

For the next several miles, you will be cruising through some of the most pristine and unspoiled wetlands in Florida. Island hopping through little and big Talbot Islands and the Timacuan Preserve, this coastal area is one of the few in Florida untouched by development, and will theoretically remain that way. Flora and Fauna abound, and nature lovers flock to the area in kayaks and flatboats to navigate the waterways in search of trout and redfish. 

Heading across the Nassau Sound Bridge to Florida’s northern most barrier island, the developments once again start to pop up. World renowned resort Amelia Island Plantation has vast acreages of condos, single family houses, an Inn rivaled by none, and a huge convention center that draws business from all over the world. A community within itself, the Plantation strives, and has done a good job, of preserving the natural habitat.

Not to be outdone, the Ritz Carlton is just a few miles north and is also a magnet for the well to do, with a golf course and all the pampering the Ritz is known for!

Almost there, we take A1A into downtown Fernandina Beach. An old fishing village like Mayport, Fernandina is much larger and has many unique and historical buildings. The waterfront is speckled with shrimp boats and deep sea charters, and Brent’s is the restaurant on the docks. Fernandina Beach also hosts an annual shrimp festival on the first weekend in May. 

Ending our motorcycle excursion from Jacksonville Beach (about an hour non stop), our last stop is a very popular watering hole for bikers and locals alike. The Palace Saloon has been there since 1878, and although it burned in 1999, it has been restored to its original 18th century wooden décor. More of a bar than a restaurant, this is where you get to know the locals, many of which are in the hospitality industry and definitely know how to party hardy! With live bands, dancing, flirting and drinking, the Palace Saloon is the place to party in Fernandina Beach!

In my next road trip article we’ll head south on A1A to our nations oldest city. Founded by Ponce de Leon in 1513 and home of the fountain of youth, this place is just a tiny little drinking town with a fishing problem!
