Guidelines on the Use of Copper Tape to Wire Your Dolls House

Lighting your dolls house can be one of the most rewarding aspects of building and owning a dolls house. The use of working lights, fires and even televisions can really add life to your house and make it a centre piece of the room in which it is housed.

The use of copper tape to light your dolls house is just one of the methods that can be used (others will be discussed in future articles). This method uses thin strips of self adhesive copper tape to conduct electricity around your house.

The first stage is to decide on the location of your dolls house lights. The socket should be removed from the end of each light and a small hole drilled to allow the wire to pass through (in this case to the back of the house). For ceiling light the hole should be drilled through the ceiling into the room upstairs and then out of the back of this room. This way wires can be covered over with carpeting etc. For wall lights that are not on the back wall these too can be trailed up the wall and then out to the back from the room above (small groves can be made in the walls to hide the wire and keep a smooth surface for decorating).

Next we need to decide on the position of the copper tape. For a front opening dolls house this would be the back of the house. The copper tape is laid down in two strips that run parallel to each other (they must not touch or they will short circuit). Where the copper tape overlaps use masking tape between the two tapes to insulate. Tape should be positioned so that the lighting wires can be easily connected and so that the wire creates a circuit.

Once the light has been installed the wire on the outside should be cut to the appropriate length to allow connection to the copper tape without lots of excess wire. To connect the wire to the copper tape separate the wire into two strands, strip the plastic coating off and solder one to either side of the copper tape circuit taking care that the copper cores do not touch.

Plug in the transformer and check that each light is working as you go – don’t wait till the end to try a figure out which light isn’t working!

While creating lighting circuit for your dolls house is relatively straight forward it should be remembered that we are working with an electrical circuit and must follow safe practices. Remember to always use the correct transformer for the job and NEVER connect straight to the mains.

The Steps to Learning Baby Care Fast

New parents have many things to learn. Bringing home a new baby changes everything about the life of a family. A baby adds challenges to balancing work and home responsibilities. New parents need to learn how to get enough sleep and continue making progress in all of the areas of their lives while still making time for their new child.

Learning proper baby care is one of the most new but important things that parents need to learn - quickly!

There is more to excellent baby care than just changing diapers or heating bottles, though every experienced parent knows the importance of those things. The true road to becoming knowledgeable and skilled in baby care is much more complex and requires more of a parent.

The process of learning about baby care must begin long before you new baby arrives. One of the best ways that parents-to-be can learn and prepare for their child is to read. Find books, magazines, and online articles on good tips and baby care skills.

You can find amazing sources at your library, at bookstores, and at most baby clothing and supply stores. If you have friends that have already begun the task of parenting you can surely borrow good books from them.

It doesn't matter where you find baby care information as much as it matters that you take the time and energy to read and learn as much as you can before baby comes. Many of your questions and concerns can be answered simply by reading advice from doctors and parents about baby care techniques.

Another way to increase your understanding of baby care before your baby even arrives is to talk to other parents. Find other couples who have recently added a baby to their family. Invite them out for dinner and pay for a babysitter for their child. Then spend a couple of hours asking as many baby care questions as you can think of.

Or prepare a list of questions in advance and bring them along. New parents and even your own parents are the best resources you have, so utilize their expertise of baby care as much as possible.

Having a new baby is a thing of great joy and also of great responsibility. Take the responsibility of parenting seriously from the start by making an effort to learn about baby care. By the time your child is born you will feel ready and capable for any parenting challenge that comes your way.

Natural Skin Care Tips for Baby

The skin on your baby is very fragile, delicate and thin. This means the skin is very sensitive and can react easily to weather temperatures and also irritants. Irritants can come from a variety of substances but mainly through the chemicals contained in the products you use on baby. Avoiding these chemicals can be as easy as purchasing organic products but here are 10 other alternatives for you to try.

1. Unbleached disposable nappies

The Choice website states: As far as dioxins are concerned, they’re a family of organochlorins that includes one of the most toxic chemicals yet made. In the past, dioxin traces were found in chlorine-bleached white paper and pulp products, including disposable nappies.

However, nowadays nappies are usually oxygen-bleached (using hydrogen peroxide), which forms no dioxin.

However do we know what consequences hydrogen peroxide will bring? There are totally unbleached disposable nappies on the market that ensures your baby does not come into contact with any bleach.

2. Never use talc on baby

Why?  Contamination of wounds or body cavities with talc is liable to cause granulomas. Inhalation of talc can cause respiratory irritation.

Prolonged exposure to talc may produce pneumocomosis. Talc is liable to be heavily contaminated with bacteria including Clostridium tetani, CL welchii and Bacillus anthracis, hence it must be sterilized. Mardindale 31 P1096, 1745, 1407 Organic talcs are usually made with corn flour, arrowroot and white clay and are wonderfully safe and very effective for keeping baby's skin dry.

3. Massage oils after bathing

Avoid mineral based oils as they contribute to the drying of the skin when absorbed. Instead use natural and organic oils that continue to soothe and moisturize baby's skin. Try products that contain sweet almond oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil and chamomile, rose, lavender and mandarin essential oils.

But remember to always do a test patch first and watch for any redness or irritation. Do not use if this occurs! You only need the tiniest amount of oil to massage into your baby's skin, less than a teaspoon.

4. Natural bottom wipes

Homemade bottom wipes can be made easily. Cut a roll of strong paper towel (Viva are great) in half. Take out the cardboard inner roll. Mix two cups of water with ½ cup sweet almond oil and ½ cup of organic baby wash.

Place one half of the roll into a container and pour over ½ of the solution. Store in container. Or for just a wiping solution try a cup of cool chamomile tea and a teaspoon of honey mixed well. Honey is a natural antiseptic so it is great for keeping baby's bottom germ free and will help treat existing nappy rash.

5. Soap free washing/bathing

Newborns can be gently and easily wiped down with rose hydrosol. This is distilled water that contains healing and soothing aromatic rose extracts suitable for the most sensitive of skin types and is very economical as you only use a small amount.

Older babies should be washed with organic baby washes as adult products tend to have harsher ingredients that can irritate baby's skin. Use baby washes sparingly.

6. Washing baby's clothes and Manchester

Always wash baby's clothes and Manchester before using and wash in pure soap flakes or a gentle skin sensitive washing solution. Do not add water softeners or conditioners as these can cause skin irritation.

Dissolve the flakes in a little warm water before adding to the washing cycle. Baby's clothes and sheets etc do not need to be disinfected, just dry in the sun.

7. Using organic baby lotion

Organic baby lotions can be used as an alternative to massage oils and help keep baby's skin from drying out.. However baby's skin is sensitive so monitor the results carefully and discontinue use if any sign of redness or irritation occurs.

8. Sanitizing cloth nappies

Washing cloth nappies at a temperature of 65 °C or hotter and then drying them in direct sunlight should eliminate any harmful germs as the ultraviolet light has a sterilizing effect and a natural bleaching ability.

Natural Nappy Soak:  Half fill a nappy bucket, then add a quarter of a cup of bicarbonate of soda and swish to dissolve, add 3 drops of lavender essential oil and 3 drops of tea tree essential oil. Soak nappies in this overnight then wash as per normal.

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse for softer nappies. Always make sure the nappy bucket lid is firmly in place, and always out of reach of children.

9. Umbilical stump tips

The umbilical stump must be kept clean and dry until it falls off naturally. Fold baby's nappy below the stump so it's exposed to the air and not to urine. Avoid bathing your baby in a bath tub until the stump falls off. Try using the hydrosol wash mentioned above. Studies have shown that leaving the stump to dry out naturally is the quickest method. Do not apply any drying agents as they can cause irritations.

10. Cradle cap care

Cradle cap is the result of overactive glands in your baby's scalp and is not dangerous. It looks like a crusty patch of skin. This drying has been attributed to the hormones the mother passes to her child at birth and can continue for several months.

The gentlest and safest way to cure cradle cap is to wipe the area with sweet almond oil, leave it on for about five-ten minutes then wash baby's scalp with an organic baby wash or shampoo. Do not leave the oil on the scalp as this will cause further dryness as the glands become ‘confused.

Organic baby products that are totally safe to use on your baby are readily available online and through chemists. There really is no excuse to be using chemicals on your baby anymore!

Tips for Dealing With Newborns

New parents face many problems and issues that they are expected to understand and deal with immediately. Unfortunately, newborns do not come with an instruction book so here are a few topics that you may need to know about.

Bathing your baby

Until your baby’s umbilical cord falls off one to two weeks after their birth, only give her sponge baths. A cotton ball or cotton swab dampened with alcohol can help to dry the umbilical stump or follow your pediatrician’s directions. After the stump falls off, you can give him a bath in a sink or shallow tub.

Caesarian delivery

A caesarian is usually performed to make delivery safer for you or your baby. C-sections can be done for many different reasons including stalled labor, complicated labor, problems with the baby that may make delivery difficult, or other problems. It does not matter if you deliver vaginally or by a caesarian section, you are still a mother with a beautiful new blessing.

Circumcision

Many doctors agree that there may be some benefit to circumcision, but it may not be absolutely necessary. It may help to lower the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer. Circumcision does not cause long-term emotional problems for your child.

Crib death (SIDS)

Many studies have been done regarding SIDS. Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:

  • Male babies are more likely to die from SIDS than females
  • Prematurity makes it more likely
  • Minority children are affected by it more often than non-minorities
  • More children of young, single mothers die from it
  • Children who live in a home with one or more smokers are more likely to be affected

Some people say that sleeping with your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagree with this statement and go on to say that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who co-sleep.

Back sleeping is what most pediatricians recommend for babies to decrease the SIDS risk. The reason for this is widely debated between health experts. If you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician.

Some Excellent Skin Care Products for Your New Baby

As most of you know, a baby's skin is considerably more sensitive than the average adult.  For that reason, it is vitally important that you use natural skin care products for your child.  Many skin care products contain chemicals and fragrances that can irritate your new baby's skin.

By knowing which products to avoid, and which products you should use, you can ensure that your little one grows up with healthy beautiful skin.

Weleda Diaper Care Cream is by far one of the best products we have found to date.  Weleda was established back in 1921 by physicians and pharmacists under the guidance of Dr. Rudolf Steiner.  The main ingredients in their diaper care cream are almond oil, calendula flower, chamomile flower, lanolin, and lavender oil.

These ingredients are contained in a base of zinc oxide.  This product provides highly effective treatment for painful diaper rash.  It is truly one-of-a-kind.

Lavera Baby Toothpaste is yet another excellent product, with absolutely no harmful ingredients.  It contains no fluoride, phosphate, or sugar.  It is made with all natural silica, which is very effective at cleaning your baby's new teeth.

This toothpaste is also ideal for helping your growing child with learning to brush his or her own teeth, as it is safe to swallow.  This product is also certified organic.

Dr. Hauschka's Sunscreen Spray for Children is an incredible product.  It has an SPF of 20, and is ideal for day-to-day use.  The wonderful thing about this sunscreen is that it is colored, and allows one to see exactly where it has been applied.

It has a pure and natural composition, and is safe for use on all skin types.  It is also water resistant, so parents can relax knowing their children have the best sun protection on the beach or in the water.  Furthermore, the plant-based nutrients moisturize your little one's skin while the sun dries it out.

Lavera Baby Shampoo will transform bath time with your baby into an oasis of fun.  As with other products from this excellent company, Lavera Baby Shampoo is comprised of all natural ingredients such as organic almond and wheat extract.

This tear-free shampoo is perfect for your baby's sensitive skin, as it helps to maintain the natural moisture balance of your baby's skin.  This gentle, mild-foaming shampoo is perfect for children and adults alike.

Regardless of the products you have chosen to use with your children, it cannot hurt to learn more about the other products that are available on the market.  While many companies advertise their products as natural, most of them cannot be considered truly natural.

The products mentioned above are just a few of the excellent products we have discovered and had the pleasure to use.  We hope you check them out for yourself.

Child Care Options for Your Baby: Pros and Cons

If you’re planning to go back to work after your baby is born, child care is a major concern. Your childcare provider will be spending a lot of time with your child, so it is critical that you be comfortable with the environment and the style of care your child will be receiving.

There are several alternatives, each with pros and cons. Spend some time evaluating each option, so that you can make the choice that best suits your needs.

The first option is in-home child care, meaning a sitter, or nanny who comes to your home to watch the child. This is by far the most expensive option, but it has many advantages. Your child will be at home, and will have the full attention of the nanny. In addition, your child will be exposed to fewer illnesses, and you will not have to transport her back and forth on your way to and from work.

The main disadvantage is that you have no real backup if your nanny gets sick or wants to take vacation. Another thing to consider is your feelings if your child develops a very strong bond with the nanny. More than one mother has been hurt by the sense that the baby is more comfortable with the nanny than with her.

The second option is a small home daycare, meaning you find someone who will keep your child in her home, perhaps with her own children or one or two others. This is a good option if you want your child in a home atmosphere, but can’t afford the full time nanny. This option shares the same disadvantages of having a nanny in terms of no backup plan.

The third option is a traditional daycare center. Traditional daycares are affordable, and there is no need to worry about a caretaker getting sick or wanting to take vacation. A daycare might also be more of a learning environment than home care, which will become more important to you as your child gets older.

The main disadvantages of daycares are that your child is exposed to all the germs of all the children. Be prepared for the both of you to be sick for a year. The other disadvantage is the numbers of children being cared for.

For example, in most states, the law requires one caretaker per eight babies. Now, I don’t know about you, but I could not effectively care for eight babies alone. So, if you decide to use a daycare center, be sure to ask their caretaker to child ratio. Look for one with about five babies per caretaker.

Choosing your baby’s childcare arrangement is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Even after you’ve chosen a care option, be diligent about ensuring that your child is receiving the best care.

Drop in unannounced at odd times of day to see what’s going on. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and let the caretaker know what’s important to you. It’s critical not only to your child’s well being, but to your own piece of mind.

Tips on How to Care for Your Baby - A Must Read for All the Mothers

The mother of a baby is the most busy person on earth, when she is not very gathered about her daily routine vis-à-vis the baby.

Breast feeding

Everyday she has to bother about  the baby’s feeding, sleeping, clothing, changing and bathing.  It is the best to feed your own milk to the child.

Please do not forget to give her the first milk of yours because that would contain colostrums, which is vital for the immune system of the child.   Mother’s milk will always create the body resistance and the child will be a healthy one in future.

When you are breast feeding your child, the food that causes problems in your body may be communicated to the baby as well. Foods that cause gas or cold should be avoided or the baby will have uncomfortable state or congestion.

Bottle feeding

If you are bottle-feeding your baby for some reasons, then make sure that the bottles are well sterilized and clean. Scrub them with washing liquids.

Boil them for 25 minutes to kill unwanted organism that may have developed in it due to the fermenting milk. Steam sterilizer and cold sterilizer methods are also there, about which one has to consult with an expert and should see to it that those are readily available in the market.

Baby sleeping

The materials needed to put the baby to sleep are  a good, firm mattress, sheets and blankets. Keep one feet distance from the nostril range of the baby if you are lying along with your baby on the same bed. There should not be unnecessary clothing or clothes around the baby’s body and bed which may cause temperature rise and heating.

The baby is not going to talk about it, and you should be sensitive enough to remove the body coverings as much as possible.  There should be a mosquito net, or at least a netted covering around the baby to keep away the flies and the mosquitoes.

Clothing

Summer clothes should be light cotton ones. When the baby is taken out, make sure that his head does not get the direct sun.  In winter, there may be sweaters, trousers and other woolens.

Changing

The baby’s diapers should be regularly changed.  The intervals should be fixed according to the baby’s routine of potting and wetting.  Despite the routine, the baby may need changing because of  untimely nature calls at times. It is the baby’s right to feel dry at every moment.  See to it that the bed is not wetted and the smelly clothes and bed sheets are removed.

Bathing

The baby needs a mouth washing with cotton.  A bath tub large enough to hold it and is easy to wash should be made available. The baby should enjoy the water which can be assessed if  leg splashing which is very distinct.

The baby should be rubbed with baby oil and baby cream. The nail clippers should be used at bath time.  After bath, the baby should be thoroughly dried and should be applied with a baby powder.

Immunisation

The baby should be immunized against Small Pox & Measles with BCG within 3 months of its age. The first DPT (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Psertussis, Polio, HIB, Meningitis C) is due within the first 2 months followed by the 2nd and the 3rd one at one month intervals.

The MMR vaccination  against Measles, Mumps and Rubella should be done within 1 years of age.  The boosters should be taken after the baby is 4 years old.

Training and Education

Though regular training and teaching should not be started before the age of three years, the child’s habits and sense of discipline is cultivated through the discipline the mother maintains. When the mother is calm against odds like the baby fever, or baby dysentery while making sure of the treatments, the child gets the idea to be calm against disastrous times.

The most important babycare tip

The parents should find enough time to spend with the baby.

How to Select a Suitable, Safe, Baby Crib Mattress?

A baby crib mattress may well be a more important purchase than the crib itself. Your little one will need a durable, firm, and safe surface for a snug sleeptime routine. An expensive crib is of little use, unless take care when choosing the baby crib mattress.

Sizing of baby crib mattresses are fairly standard, but take the necessary measurements along to ensure a snug fit in the crib. It is vital to make sure that the mattress is firm. If there is too much give, it can present a safety hazard.

Most manufacturers of baby crib mattresses offer you a choice of foam, or coil products. A foam mattress is light, yet firm. Changing the sheets are often easier with a lighter mattress. A coil mattress can be more durable, and will continue to provide a firm surface for a growing child. Your budget, and personal taste will be the determining factors in your choice.

What Better Way to is There to Present Baby Food, Than the Organic, Fresh, Tasty and Homemade Way?

The next time you stroll down the baby food aisle, gaze for a moment at the meticulously stacked jars of baby food.  What could be easier, flavors galore with quick, easy open tops.  Ready to serve in an instant!  But would you eat it?

Making your own baby food is easy and delicious.  It is healthier and doesn’t take much time to prepare.  First, start with organic vegetables, if at all possible.  Get yourself a steamer and begin cooking.

Clean your vegetables thoroughly.  Most baby’s love homemade carrots and sweet potatoes the best.  You can also use squash, peaches or apples, whatever looks good for the season.  All of these can be steamed together to make things quicker.  Put some water in the bottom of your pot, put in the steamer and add cut up veggies and fruit.  Steam the food until it is soft and let cool.

There is no need to season or add salt to steamed food as fruit and vegetables are naturally seasoned.  Pick out any seeds or fibrous strings that could choke your baby.

Separate the steamed food and put each separately in a food processor, adding a little bottled or filtered water when needed to soften food.  As your little one grows, you can leave larger bits of food in the mix.  But for your baby, keep it smooth and creamy.  Rinse the processor after each batch you make.

You can buy little jars or containers to use or even use ice cube trays to store your food.  Freeze the steamed food in little portions so you won’t waste any during feedings.  These can be thawed overnight in the refrigerator or warmed in hot water.

Always mix well and stick your clean finger in the food to look for hot spots.  It is not a good idea to microwave the steamed food, as it can overheat and burn your baby.

When feeding your baby, never put the spoon in a jar full of food.  The saliva on the spoon will break down the food and you will have to throw out the rest.

Keep your food in the freezer by date, with the newer batches going behind the old.  The food can be frozen for three months.  Once you see how rich in color these steamed foods are, you will never want to go back to jarred, store-bought baby food.

How to Help Your Teen to Find His/her Own Healthy Balance of Computer and Non-computer Time?

Any parent of a teenager today who sees their child’s face in full frontal view is lucky indeed.  Many of us are accustomed to addressing the back of our offspring’s head, silhouetted against the glowing blue light of the computer screen.

It seems like pretty basic common sense that it can’t be great for a kid’s growing body to be sitting motionless in front of a screen all day, so I won’t bore you with all the research.  However, the computer is today’s vehicle of choice for the social connections that are so critical to a teenager’s world.

The developmental task of the teen years is to master autonomy.  Toward this end, many parents wisely allow their teens plenty of freedom to make and learn from mistakes.  It can be challenging to sit back and watch your teen experiment with spending too much time at the computer.

But if you impose a mandate that he or she ‘get off that computer this instant,’ you are interrupting your child’s natural feedback system before it has a chance to register its own protest regarding the prolonged physical stillness.

Here are my sneaky, tried, and true suggestions for helping your teen to find his/her own healthy balance of computer and non-computer time without turning your family life into one big power struggle:

Locate the computer within range of your sight and hearing

If it is in your child’s room, have an open door policy.  Find a friendly reason to drop in -- deliver a drink and a snack, the mail, or the laundry.  While you are nearby, notice what is on display and ask casual questions. When your teen knows you could show up at any second, he or she is more careful about what makes it onto that screen.

Show your interest and curiosity by listening to your teen when he or she talks about what is happening in chat rooms or online activities.

Pay attention!  Don’t freak out, but do feel free to share your values regarding ethics, morality, and problem-solving.  Offer yourself as a resource if they should ever encounter a situation that troubles them.

Share news articles or stories you have heard about internet abuse.

No lectures!  Just information.  Your teen will connect the dots.

When you feel they’ve been sitting still for too long, offer to do a more compelling activity together, rather than simply lecture or demand they turn the computer off.

Invite your teen to participate in a physical activity WITH YOU.  Shoot hoops, play pool, go for a bike ride, go shopping.  You know what they like to do best.  Offer it!  Challenge yourself to make real life more interesting than virtual reality.

Ask for help around the house.

Often my son gets into command-following autopilot while playing games, so when I ask him to get the clothes out of the dryer he just does it!  If he hears the whir of the kitchen mixer, he inevitably comes down to see what I’m baking, and a few minutes later is up to his elbows in cookie batter.

Help your teen access and acknowledge their body’s signals.

Ask how their eyes, back, or arms are feeling.  Just ask, don’t tell!

Be an impeccable role model.

Talk about why you are getting up to stretch now, or how stiff your neck feels when you work online for too long.  Turn on loud music and dance around the house to loosen up.  All the better if you dance on in to your child’s computer space and hassle them a little bit in a playful way.

The bottom line is that the more you try to compel a teenager to do something that is your idea about what is best for them, the less successful you will be!  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be a living and thriving example of balance.

Enjoy real life to the fullest, and invite your teen to join you.  Be irresistibly engaged in enjoying physical activity yourself, and you will become more magnetic to your teen than virtual reality.

How to Discipline and Build a Bond With Your Children?

Children are inquisitive by nature.  When they are younger, it's usually because they want to better understand something.

When they are older, it's because they want to better understand why you think something is important and why they should also feel the same way.

Regardless of their age, it's imperative that when setting forth the rules and expectations in your home, your child understands there is no room for questioning the rules you set forth and the consequences of breaking the rules.

Younger children usually do not understand a lengthy explanation of why it's important that they be home from their friend's home at a certain time or why they aren't allowed to play ball in the house.

But the one thing they do strive to do most of the time is to make their parents proud and happy.  So when a young child asks "Why?" or "Why not?" when they are told they can't play with something or someone or why they have to obey a rule you've set forth, simply explain to them that "because it makes me happy when you follow the house rules and do what I have asked of you."

You should avoid using the term, "Because I said so," as that only adds to the child's frustration and confusion.

Older children, adolescents and teenagers alike will probably require more from your explanation.  When they question "Why?" or "Why not?" it's best to directly, honestly and clearly state your reasoning.

"I asked you to be home by 10 p.m. because we have to be at the dentist's office first thing in the morning for your check-up and we can't be late."

It is also a great opportunity for you to reiterate the consequences of breaking the rule.  "If you are not home by 10 p.m., you'll be grounded from going to your friend's house for a week." Be consistent, be firm, and be clear.

Though your child may challenge you by asking your reasoning why a rule has been put in place, it also shows their growth as an individual thinker.

So try not to get angry or frustrated when they do so; realize it's their way of understanding their world around them.

Common Causes of Babies Crying

Introduction

Crying is a normal event in the lives of all babies. When a baby comes out of the womb the first thing to do is crying. By the first cry he will take some air in to the lungs for the first time in their life.

After delivery if the baby does not cry then it should be initiated by slightly pinching or gently stroking the feet. From this it is clear that the healthy baby should cry and it is a normal physiological event ,still some times it can upset the mother or family members.

We all know that a baby can't tell his needs or troubles in words. The only way for him  to communicate with others is by crying. Babies show some other signs like feet kicking, hand waving and head turning etc. But the best way to take the attention of others is by crying.

Excessive crying may not have a firm definition because the crying habit changes from baby to baby and some babies can be calmed easily but some are difficult to sooth. If crying is distressing for the mother and home nurse it can be called excessive.

Many a times baby become quiet by giving breast milk or by carrying with a gentle rocking.Sudden onset of excessive crying means baby is distressed and needs attention. The causes of crying extends from simple reasons to life threatening conditions. Hence crying of a baby should not be ignored.

Most of the time it is difficult to find the cause of the cry. Common causes are discussed here for awareness.

6. Tight Clothes

Tight cloths especially during warm climate is intolerable for kids. Tight elastic of the the dress can also produce soreness in the hip region.

7. Dark room

When the baby wakes up from sleep he needs some dim light. If there is darkness he will disturb the sleep of parents by crying. Of course he will be irritated by strong light resulting in cry.

This also causes difficult breathing resulting in cry. Often a typical sound can be heard with each breath.

11. General aching

Generalized body ache with restlessness is seen in flu and prodromal stages of some infectious diseases can result in continuous cry.

12. Habitual Crying

Some babies cry without any real cause ending the parents in agony. Many a times doctor is called for help.

13. Nappy rash

If a tight and wet nappy is kept for a long time results in this condition.

Rash can also be due to some allergic reaction to the elastic material of the nappy.  When the rash appears it causes soreness and baby become sleepless and cry.  All other skin lesions like eczema, ecthyma, candidiasis etc also causes same problems.

14. Ear Ache

Ear infection is common in wet climate. The infection may spread from the throat. Ear infection can result in rupture of ear drum causing discharge of pus. Ear ache usually becomes worse at night when lying down. Child will become restless with cry and may not allow you to touch the ear. Some children with earache rub the affected ear frequently.

15. Colic

When the baby cry continuously most of us diagnose it as colic. This problem is still a topic for debate because exact cause for colic is not known and diagnosis is also difficult to confirm.Colic may be associated with rumbling and distention of abdomen.

Child often feels better when lying on abdomen. Some children may not allow you to touch the abdomen. If the child cries continuously doctors help is needed.

16. Infections

All infections causes some kind of pain or irritation resulting in cry. Infection may be anywhere in the body.Usually it is associated with fever, redness and swelling.

17. Reactions to certain food

It is said that one man's food is another man's poison. Some food articles can produce some allergic reactions. Allergy is manifested in the form of redness, breathlessness, gastric symptons and continuous cry.

18. Hard stools

Constipated babies with hard stools may cry when they get the urge for stool. Some children hesitate to pass stool because of pain .

19. Gastro esophagial reflex

Here baby cries with spilling of food after feeding. If this continues it may be due to gastroesophageal reflex. This is due to failure of the lower part of esophagus to close after food causing regurgitation from the stomach. It is difficult to diagnose this condition and can be confirmed by giving antireflex medicines.

20. Dentition

During dentition child becomes restless with crying. Often associated with gastric troubles and diarrhea.

Some rare reasons

1. Bowel obstruction

Bowel obstruction is associated with severe pain and vomiting. Abdomen is distended with rumbling sound.Baby is constipated with absence of flatus.

2. Septicemia

Invasion of pathogenic micro organisms in to the blood is called septicemia.Fever is associated with this condition.

3. Torsion of testes in male kids

When a male baby cries continuously his scrotum should be examined.Torsion of the testes produce severe pain which will be worse by touching the affected testes. When the testes is pressed upwards pain is relieved. If this is not treated properly it can damage the affected  testes due to lack of blood supply.

4. Meningitis

Initially there may not be fever, hence crying baby with alternate vacant stare and irritability should not be ignored. Fontanel is bulging. Neck rigidity and seizures may appear later.

5. Retention of urine

Children with retention of urine will have agonizing pain making them restless.

7. Major injuries

Major injury to any parts of the body causes pain. Occasionally children will fall while carrying and results in head injury. Head injury is associated with reflex vomiting and convulsions.

Sleep Tips for Infants and Children

During Infancy

For three or four weeks after birth the infant sleeps more or less, day and night, only waking to satisfy the demands of hunger; at the expiration of this time, however, each interval of wakefulness grows longer, so that it sleeps less frequently, but for longer periods at a time.

This disposition to repose in the early weeks of the infant's life must not be interfered with; but this period having expired, great care is necessary to induce regularity in its hours of sleep, otherwise too much will be taken in the day-time, and restless and disturbed nights will follow. The child should be brought into the habit of sleeping in the middle of the day, before its dinner, and for about two hours, more or less. If put to rest at a later period of the day, it will invariably cause a bad night.

At first the infant should sleep with its parent. The low temperature of its body, and its small power of generating heat, render this necessary. If it should happen, however, that the child has disturbed and restless nights, it must immediately be removed to the bed and care of another female, to be brought to its mother at an early hour in the morning, for the purpose of being nursed. This is necessary for the preservation of the mother's health, which through sleepless nights would of course be soon deranged, and the infant would also suffer from the influence which such deranged health would have upon the milk.

When a month or six weeks has elapsed, the child, if healthy, may sleep alone in a cradle or cot, care being taken that it has a sufficiency of clothing, that the room in which it is placed is sufficiently warm, viz. 60 degrees, and the position of the cot itself is not such as to be exposed to currents of cold air. It is essentially necessary to attend to these points, since the faculty of producing heat, and consequently the power of maintaining the temperature, is less during sleep than at any other time, and therefore exposure to cold is especially injurious. It is but too frequently the case that inflammation of some internal organ will occur under such circumstances, without the true source of the disease ever being suspected.

Here, however, a frequent error must be guarded against,  that of covering up the infant in its cot with too much clothing throwing over its face the muslin handkerchief and, last of all, drawing the drapery of the bed closely together. The object is to keep the infant sufficiently warm with pure air; it therefore ought to have free access to its mouth, and the atmosphere of the whole room should be kept sufficiently warm to allow the child to breathe it freely: in winter, therefore, there must always be a fire in the nursery.

The child up to two years old, at least, should sleep upon a feather bed, for the reasons referred to above. The pillow, however, after the sixth month, should be made of horsehair; for at this time teething commences, and it is highly important that the head should be kept cool.

During Childhood

Up to the third or fourth year the child should be permitted to sleep for an hour or so before its dinner. After this time it may gradually be discontinued; but it must be recollected, that during the whole period of childhood more sleep is required than in adult age. The child, therefore, should be put to rest every evening between seven and eight; and if it be in health it will sleep soundly until the following morning.

No definite rule, however, can be laid down in reference to the number of hours of sleep to be allowed; for one will require more or less than another.Regularity as to the time of going to rest is the chief point to attend to; permit nothing to interfere with it, and then only let the child sleep without disturbance, until it awakes of its own accord on the following morning, and it will have had sufficient rest.

The amount of sleep necessary to preserve health varies according to the state of the body, and the habits of the individual. Infants pass much the greater portion of their time in sleep. Children sleep twelve or fourteen hours. The schoolboy generally ten. In youth, a third part of the twenty-four hours is spent in sleep. Whilst, in advanced age, many do not spend more than four, five, or six hours in sleep.

It is a cruel thing for a mother to sacrifice her child's health that she may indulge her own vanity, and yet how often is this done in reference to sleep. An evening party is to assemble, and the little child is kept up for hours beyond its stated time for retiring to rest, that it may be exhibited, fondled, and admired. Its usual portion of sleep is thus abridged, and, from the previous excitement, what little he does obtain, is broken and unrefreshing, and he rises on the morrow wearied and exhausted.

Once awake, it should not be permitted to lie longer in bed, but should be encouraged to arise immediately. This is the way to bring about the habit of early rising, which prevents many serious evils to which parents are not sufficiently alive, promotes both mental and corporeal health, and of all habits is said to be the most conducive to longevity.

A child should never be suddenly aroused from sleep; it excites the brain, quickens the action of the heart, and, if often repeated, serious consequences would result. The change of sleeping to waking should always be gradual.

The bed on which the child now sleeps should be a mattress: at this age a feather bed is always injurious to children; for the body, sinking deep into the bed, is completely buried in feathers, and the unnatural degree of warmth thus produced relaxes and weakens the system, particularly the skin, and renders the child unusually susceptible to the impressions of cold.

Then, instead of the bed being made up in the morning as soon as vacated, and while still saturated with the nocturnal exhalations from the body, the bed-clothes should be thrown over the backs of chairs, the mattress shaken well up, and the window thrown open for several hours, so that the apartment shall be thoroughly ventilated.

It is also indispensably requisite not to allow the child to sleep with persons in bad health, or who are far advanced in life; if and where possible, it should always sleep alone.

How to Select Suitable Clothes for Infant and Toddler?

During Infancy

Infants are very susceptible of the impressions of cold; a proper regard, therefore, to a suitable clothing of the body, is imperative to their enjoyment of health. Unfortunately, an opinion is prevalent in society, that the tender child has naturally a great power of generating heat and resisting cold; and from this popular error has arisen the most fatal results.

This opinion has been much strengthened by the insidious manner in which cold operates on the frame, the injurious effects not being always manifest during or immediately after its application, so that but too frequently the fatal result is traced to a wrong source, or the infant sinks under the action of an unknown cause.

The power of generating heat in warm-blooded animals is at its minimum at birth, and increases successively to adult age; young animals, instead of being warmer than adults, are generally a degree or two colder, and part with their heat more readily; facts which cannot be too generally known.

They show how absurd must be the folly of that system of "hardening" the constitution (to which reference has been before made), which induces the parent to plunge the tender and delicate child into the cold bath at all seasons of the year, and freely expose it to the cold, cutting currents of an easterly wind, with the lightest clothing.

The principles which ought to guide a parent in clothing her infant are as follows:

The material and quantity of the clothes should be such as to preserve a sufficient proportion of warmth to the body, regulated therefore by the season of the year, and the delicacy or strength of the infant's constitution.

In effecting this, however, the parent must guard against the too common practice of enveloping the child in innumerable folds of warm clothing, and keeping it constantly confined to very hot and close rooms; thus running into the opposite extreme to that to which I have just alluded: for nothing tends so much to enfeeble the constitution, to induce disease, and render the skin highly susceptible to the impression of cold; and thus to produce those very ailments which it is the chief intention to guard against.

In their make they should be so arranged as to put no restrictions to the free movements of all parts of the child's body; and so loose and easy as to permit the insensible perspiration to have a free exit, instead of being confined to and absorbed by the clothes, and held in contact with the skin, till it gives rise to irritation.

In their quality they should be such as not to irritate the delicate skin of the child. In infancy, therefore, flannel is rather too rough, but is desirable as the child grows older, as it gives a gentle stimulus to the skin, and maintains health.

In its construction the dress should be so simple as to admit of being quickly put on, since dressing is irksome to the infant, causing it to cry, and exciting as much mental irritation as it is capable of feeling. Pins should be wholly dispensed with, their use being hazardous through the carelessness of nurses, and even through the ordinary movements of the infant itself.

The clothing must be changed daily. It is eminently conducive to good health that a complete change of dress should be made every day. If this is not done, washing will, in a great measure, fail in its object, especially in insuring freedom from skin diseases.

During Childhood

The clothing of the child should possess the same properties as that of infancy. It should afford due warmth, be of such materials as do not irritate the skin, and so made as to occasion no unnatural constriction.

In reference to due warmth, it may be well again to repeat, that too little clothing is frequently productive of the most sudden attacks of active disease; and that children who are thus exposed with thin clothing in a climate so variable as ours are the frequent subjects of croup, and other dangerous affections of the air- passages and lungs.

On the other hand, it must not be forgotten, that too warm clothing is a source of disease, sometimes even of the same diseases which originate in exposure to cold, and often renders the frame more susceptible of the impressions of cold, especially of cold air taken into the lungs. Regulate the clothing, then, according to the season; resume the winter dress early; lay it aside late; for it is in spring and autumn that the vicissitudes in our climate are greatest, and congestive and inflammatory complaints most common.

With regard to material (as was before observed), the skin will at this age bear flannel next to it; and it is now not only proper, but necessary. It may be put off with advantage during the night, and cotton maybe substituted during the summer, the flannel being resumed early in the autumn. If from very great delicacy of constitution it proves too irritating to the skin, fine fleecy hosiery will in general be easily endured, and will greatly conduce to the preservation of health.

It is highly important that the clothes of the boy should be so made that no restraints shall be put on the movements of the body or limbs, nor injurious pressure made on his waist or chest. All his muscles ought to have full liberty to act, as their free exercise promotes both their growth and activity, and thus insures the regularity and efficiency of the several functions to which these muscles are subservient.

The same remarks apply with equal force to the dress of the girl; and happily, during childhood, at least, no distinction is made in this matter between the sexes. Not so, however, when the girl is about to emerge from this period of life; a system of dress is then adopted which has the most pernicious effects upon her health, and the development of the body, the employment of tight stays, which impede the free and full action of the respiratory organs, being only one of the many restrictions and injurious practices from which in latter years they are thus doomed to suffer so severely.

The Simple Guide to Caring for Babies - What You Should Not Do?

1. Never shake the baby, it can cause damage to the brain.

2. Don't leave any small articles near the baby .

3. Sharp pointed articles like pen, pencil, etc should not be kept away from babies.

4. Avoid entry of water in to the ear while giving a bath.

5. Food should not be given forcibly when the baby is crying or coughing continuously.

6. Do Not overfeed the baby.

7. Articles like mosquito repellents, moth balls, ink, gum, medicines, etc should be kept away.

8. Avoid tight clothing.

9. Should not be placed near the edge of the bed.

10. Should not give the baby to strangers and avoid close contact with others.

11. All electrical instruments should be kept away, and bed should not be arranged near electrical sockets and wires.

12. Kitchen is a dangerous place for children. Don't leave them alone in the kitchen.

13. Water level in the bath tub should be minimum and don't go for any other works (to attend phone call or calling bell etc) when the  baby is in the tub.

14. Avoid smoking inside the house.

15. Should not allow pet animals to be in very close contact with the baby. (anti rabies injections should be given to pets and cut their nails properly)

16. When the child starts walking should not be kept alone on the upstairs and should not allow them to climb the steps.

17. Strong light should be avoided in the room.

18. When you are travelling don't give the food articles given by co passengers.

19. Baby should not be allowed to crawl on the soil.

20. If you are sick, or someone else is sick, keep away from the baby.

21. Don't take the baby to hospital wards, crowded market places, and polluted dusty areas.

22. Table lamps should not be kept near the kids, this will attract insects at night and cause problems.

23. Other medicine should not be given to the children.

24. Medicine which has passed the expiry date should not be used.

The Simple Guide to Caring for Babies - What You Should Do?

1. Always keep the baby neat and clean.

2. Cut the nails properly with utmost care.

3. Wet nappy should be removed and parts should be cleaned with soap.

4. Take care of the genitals because fungal infection is common in that area. Parts should be kept dry.

5. Care of the scalp is very important. Fungal infections, dermatitis etc. can be prevented by proper cleaning.

6. Tight dress can cause irritation, hence dress should be loose and should allow entry of air.

7. Room should have sufficient light and ventilation. It should be free from dust and insects.

8. Separate bed preferably water proof is needed for kids. It should be arranged near mother's bed.

9. Always keep some music making toys near the baby.

10. While carrying the baby, support the head with hand. Since the neck muscles are weak sudden fall of head can be dangerous.

11. Mothers milk is the best nutrition for the baby, it also gives emotional attachment. Breast milk should be given as per the babies need preferably in mother sitting position. Proper cleaning of nipple is also necessary. Mother should take good nutritious diet throughout lactating period.

12. If there is some contraindication for breast feeding cows milk can be given. Feeding bottle should be cleaned with warm water and should be kept dry till next use.

13. Cows milk should be boiled and cooled. Some diseases like bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis etc. spread through raw milk.

14. Some children are allergic to some substances like food, milk, dress, cosmetics etc.. Try to find out the material causing allergy and avoid such things.

15. Mosquito nets should be used regularly.Diseases like malaria, dengue, filariasis, yellow fever and etc. spread through mosquito bites. Mosquito bite can also produce skin eruptions with some allergic reactions. It also disturbs sound sleep.

16. A calm atmosphere should be maintained for a good sleep. Compared to adults infants need more sleep. It is said that growth hormone secretion is activated during sleep.

17. Growth development, behavioral development, motor development, personal social development, language development etc should be noted down in relation to age.  However parents need not be over anxious because slight variations are seen from individual to individual.

18. Assessment of growth by measuring height and weight is necessary.

19. In the early months of life infant may defecate after every feed. Proper toilet training should be given when the infant grows. The infant can be placed on the toilet seat by the age of ten months.

20. The toilet seat (potty seat) should be cleaned with antiseptic liquid before and after use. It should not be shared by other children.

21. If  the baby shows some signs of distress like excessive crying, convulsions, fever with rigor, stiffness of neck, frequent vomiting and diarrhea, bluish discoloration of the body, difficult breathing with grunting, etc pay attention and consult your doctor.

22. A first aid box should be kept in the room, which should contain sterile cotton, dressing materials, antiseptic lotion and ointment and forceps. Separate book should be maintained to note down the phone numbers of doctors, ambulance, police etc.

23. Child's medicines should be kept in separate box. Information regarding dose and mode of administration should be written in a paper and affixed on the box.

24. While driving keep the baby in separate seat belt.

25. When you are going out with the baby keep an identity card with your phone number and address inside his small pocket.

26. When the infant starts walking always accompany him to prevent a fall and injuries thereby.

27. In emergencies take the first aid measures and take the victim to nearby hospital.

Choking:

The baby may swallow some solid objects and cause obstruction.  Immediately make the baby to lie on the abdomen in head low position and press the abdomen backwards and towards the chest.  Stroking the upper back is also useful. If no result call a trained person to take the material with the help of forceps.

Accidental poisoning:

Try to takeout the poisonous substance and induce vomiting (except kerosine & acids).  Wash the body with water to reduce absorption through skin.Identify the pioson and take the victim to the hospital.

Burns:

First of all remove the source of heat and put clean cold water. Burned cloths should not be removed immediately.  Cover the wound with sterile cotton and take to nearby hospital.

Wounds:

Clean the wound with clean water and stop the bleeding by compressing, raising the wound above the level of heart or use a tourniquet to compress blood vessels.  Then dress the wound with sterile cotton, bandage and consult a doctor.

Drowning in bath tub:

Take the baby immediately and keep the head in a low position, press the abdomen gentely or give a mouth to mouth sucking till the air way is clear.  Give mouth to mouth breathing and cardiac massage and take the victim to the hospital.

Electric shock:

Stop the source of current.  Then observe the victim,if no breathing give mouth to mouth breath along with cardiac massage and take to the hospital.

28. And the last but not the least, give your child maximum care, love and support to make him/her healthy and happy for ever.

Three Suggestions You Can Profit From Running a Home Based Child Care Business

How can you profit from the boom in child care services? Here are a few suggestions.

1. Provide Child Care from Your Home

Would you like to provide child care services from your  own home? If so, here is some advice obtained from an experienced child care provider:
  • There may be laws in your area that limit the number of children (other than your own) that you can care for from  your home. It could be just five or six children.
  • Don't do half days. If someone drops their child off just for the morning and someone else drops their child  off just for the afternoon, it still ties you down all day.
  • If you're going to be tied down all day, you might as well  get paid for it. Charge for full days and full weeks.
  • Keep in mind that with a limit to the number of children you can legally care for from your home, accepting a child just on Wednesdays will mean that you are not able to take another child from Monday to Friday (because  then you'll have one child too many on Wednesdays). This  limits your income.
  • Be extremely safety conscious. Children are precious.
  • You really must love children to successfully provide  child care services from your home.
  • Structure and routine are very important. Keep to a  schedule of regular nap and meal times for the children.
2. Provide Value-Added Child Care

You can add value to your home based child care services. In this way, you will be able to set yourself apart from  your competition and charge higher fees.

If you live on a farm, you might offer horseback riding instruction.

Could you offer a sports camp, craft classes, music  lessons, computer training or other activities for  children?

3. Run a Home Based Child Care Referral Service

Another way to profit from the boom in child care  services is to operate a child care referral service.

Advertise to find child care workers and babysitters. Screen and interview them. Then, provide parents with suitable matches for a fee.

These are just a few ways that you, too, can profit from running a home based child care business.

Why Parents Need to Accept and Celebrate Your Child's Uniqueness?

Just like a snowflake or a fingerprint, every child is unique in their own special way. Every child has a unique way of feeling, thinking, and interacting with others.

Some children are shy, while others are outgoing; some are active, while others are calm; some are fretful, while others are easy-going. As a loving and nurturing parent, it's your job to encourage them to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate their individual qualities.

Allow your child to express themselves through their interests.  They may find a creative outlet in theatre, dancing or art, or they may be exceptionally talented in the sciences.  Encourage them to embrace what they like to do, what interests them, and what makes them happy.  Help them realize that they don't need to worry about being 'like everyone else.'

Teach your child to make positive choices, and praise them for good deeds, behaviors and positive traits they possess.  Encourage them to become actively involved in their community, and introduce them to activities that promote a sense of cooperation and accomplishment.  Be firm yet fair when handing down discipline for misdeeds or misbehaviors, and make certain the rules and consequences for breaking the rules are clearly defined.  Show a cooperative, loving and united front with your spouse when it comes to discipline.

Accept and celebrate your child's uniqueness. Remember that your child is an individual. Allow your child to have his or her own personal preferences and feelings, which may be different from your own.

And finally, encourage your child to be true to themselves by doing the same.  Show your child how to make positive choices with the choices you make, and that nobody is perfect and you too make mistakes.  Show your child that mistakes can be a great learning experience, and that they should not be ashamed or embarrassed about making them.
