Today I am going to give a simple explanation of what endometriosis actually is:
- Endometriosis is a condition involving the over development of the uterus lining
- It can cause pain and infertility
- It can spread to other internal areas of the body
- About 2% - 10% of all females are affected by endometriosis.
Endometriosis involves the uterus lining developing on the outside of the uterus. Since this is abnormal, serious health complications can arise. Endometriosis normally manifests when women are at a reproductive age - but it can develop early or later in life. The majority of women affected are between the age of 20 and 30.
The cause of endometriosis is not completely understood. There are a whole bunch of competing theories, but only a few links. One of the links includes the over production of estrogen. Another cause may be a reaction to stem cell production in the uterus wall.
It is also likely that endometriosis is a genetically transmitted condition. If your close female relatives have endometriosis you are more likely to contract the disorder as well.
Once the disorder is active the most common symptom is pain. Usually the pain will develop during menstruation. Some of the symptoms include:
- menstrual cramping
- lower back pain
- nausea
- fatigue
- infertility
- cysts
In the next article I will cover the common signs of endometriosis.
