Vince
Lombardi, Hall of Fame coach of the Green Bay Packers, once started
training camp with the line, “Gentlemen, this is a football.”
He
then proceeded to lay down a foundation of fundamentals. Building his
player’s skills from the bottom up.
He did not assume they knew even the
most “basic” of football skills.
And these were professional, championship-caliber athletes.
Why did he spend so much time teaching world-class athletes the most basic, foundational skills?
Because he knew that “details” were less important that foundations.
Because he know that if the foundation is not there, the details will crumble.
Because
he know that a mistake on a “detail” would probably not cause his team
to lose a game, but a mistake on a fundamental, definitely would.
So he built the foundation in fundamentals.
Skill by skill. Player by player.
Then he added the details.
And his teams won 5 championships in 7 years.
What does this have to do with your online success?
Well, a lot of would-be entrepreneurs underestimate the importance of fundamentals.
They
buy into the notion, promoted by the flavor-of-the-month guru, that
some trick or trend or technique or “detail” will be the secret formula
that leads them to the “championship.
And it never works.
Because the foundation is not there.
The fundamentals are not in place. When your “team” can’t block and
tackle, it doesn’t matter how many trick plays you know. You’ll get run
over.
